Surprise 50th Celebration

It was one of my co-worker's 50th birthday last week, so we wanted to do a little more than the usual cake. We decided to have a breakfast party (with cake as dessert).

We found some cute decorations online from the party store. But when I went to the store to buy them, the store was closed. Can you believe they close at 8:30pm on Wednesday nights? What is up with that? Since we had already ordered the cake in the same colors, I decided to DIY it and headed to the dollar store and made some other decorations at home with the help of Photoshop.

Here is my 99 cent wall (actually about $4 worth). Since there were no pink and black streamers, I got some white ones and added a pink and black ribbon to make sure our colors were there.

Here's where the Photoshop magic happened. I made these from scratch on Photoshop. I think I'm getting a little better at Photoshopping, cause the three different designs I used took me less than an hour to create. And I modified them to make them all a little special.

At last, the cake. It was custom made to match our decor by Cake Designs by JC. My friend has most of her special occasion cakes made by him. His cakes are beautiful and delicious, I can see why she keeps going back to him.

So here's the room all ready for the party to start. Not to bad for some DIY and dollar store goodies. See you can make a party on any budget, you just need to know how and where to use your dollars.

2012 Golden Globes: Fashion

Ah, awards season is upon us once again. I love watching the fashions grace the red carpet. And I totally love that Ricky Gervais is back. He's freaking hilarious and the celebs need to suck it up and take it.

But now let's get to the main event, the fashion. (WARNING: This post is SUPER image heavy!)

First off the trends. You had your usual array of black and nudes on the carpet, but there was also surprisingly color on the carpet.

There was burgundy:

Emma Stone in Lanvin

Emma is one of my new favorite actresses out there right now (and it also helps that she's a redhead). I'm usually not a fan of Lanvin, but I think his latest collection may change my mind. This one is stunning. The shades of burgundy looked great on her and her hair even stayed looking red (this is a feat sometimes wearing a color like that). The eagle belt was all the bling she needed for this.

Julianna Margulies in Naeem Khan

I love Julianna and she was wearing one of the colors of the night, but this dress was just too matronly on her. She was so covered and sequined, I was not a fan. I did love the contrast of her jade earrings though.

Tina Fey in Oscar de la Renta

Tina finally is a fashion do! This lady is one of the funniest out there, but her fashion on the red carpet always makes her the target of the joke. This gorgeous dress finally has her looking like the lead actress that she is. Go Tina!

Freida Pinto in Prada

Freida looked beautiful in this Prada gown. The color looked amazing on her. And the simple accessories really completed the look. The fabric of the gown had a texture to it, so the simple silhouette made it look classic with a modern feel.

Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang

Sofia Vergara always pretty much goes for the same va-va-va-voom look. It works for her, but I'd love to see her in something else. That being said, her Vera Wang was predictable, but very pretty. The layers of what looked like organza ruffles on the tail of her mermaid gown really gave it the touch it needed.

There was also green on the carpet, but the ones that looked best mixed the green with darker colors:

Evan Rachel Wood in Gucci Premiere

Evan Rachel Wood is one of those hit or miss people on the carpet, but I think this was a total hit. The gown had sequins, what looked like scales and even feathers, but the ombred look was just picture perfect. I'm glad she's back to being a blonde, it really helps to lighten the look. This was just stunning.

Zooey Deschanel in Prada

People don't get Zooey's fashion most of the time. She usually goes for actual vintage or vintage-inspired looks. When I saw her arrive in this green and black one-of-a-kind Prada, I was shocked and amazed. She kept her hair and makeup 60s, but the Prada, with it's lime green beaded bodice, fit her quirky personality while showing that she can do modern looks too.

And the one trend you could spot a mile away was the bright yellow:

Mireille Enos

Ok, I admit I had no idea who this was. Then I heard she was from The Killing, and then I realized this was Joey's second wife, Kathy from Big Love. It's so weird to see her all dressed up. She looks stunning in this yellow gown and the red lips really brighten up her face.

Missi Pyle

A slightly different shade of yellow on Missi. I think the color isn't the best shade of yellow, and I also think the blondes have to be careful with this new yellow trend. Missi's overskirt looks like the same tone as her hair.

Paula Patton in Monique Lhuillier

The yellow gown of the night was worn by Paula Patton! The shade of yellow looked beautiful with her skin tone and the design of the dress really showed off the fun vibrant color. Her simple jewels and hair really helped set off the look perfectly.

Amy Poehler in Naeem Khan & Will Arnett

Funny in the house! Amy Poehler and Will Arnett left the kids at home and got all dressed up serious-style for the big night. I wasn't a huge fan of Amy's dress, but I'll let her pass. Leslie Knope in 2012!

Elton John & David Furnish

New daddies Elton and David wore classic tuxedos, but added a little bling. Elton wore a brooch and David wore blinged out shoes. They looked great and so happy.

Harrison Ford & Calista Flockhart in Gucci

Harrison and Calista haven't been out in a while, but they looked great. When I first saw Calista's dress, I loved it, but I hadn't seen the full body shot. I feel like they forgot to add the last layer to her dress. She looked great, I just wished it was longer.

Nicole Kidman in Versace & Keith Urban

Nicole needs some self-tanner if she wants to keep wearing these light colors. The dress was really interesting with all of the studs, but she's so pale, you can barely tell where the dress ends and her skin begins. Thankfully she always has the adorable Keith at her side.

Angeline Jolie in Atelier Versace & Brad Pitt

The king and queen arrived and haven't looked better. Angie's dress was stunning. It's so nice to see her out of her usual black. And Brad looked great too, cane and all. His tux was classic as always, but his hair is what I really loved. I like Brad's hair longer, but longer and clean is just swoon-worthy.

Steven Spielberg & Kate Capshaw

I think Kate had some more work done, but who cares. Steven Spielberg is back! They both looked classic and elegant and I liked Steven's scarf. It was a cute classic Hollywood touch. But most of all I'm just glad he's making movies again.

Here it is the main event, best and worst dresssed. We'll start off with the best (in no particular order).

The Best Men:

George Clooney

You can't tell in the picture, but apparently Mr. Clooney's tux was midnight blue. This guy can just wear a tux. He will forever be on my best dressed list.

Ewan McGregor

Is it weird that I just want Ewan to burst out into song? He just looked great, skinny lapel tux, skinny tie, but classic slicked hair that just completed the look. So handsome, so Hollywood.

Gerard Butler

This is another of the super dark blue tuxes. What I loved about Gerard Butler was that he just looked so Scottish. The three piece classic tux, and another one with the longer hair. And Gerard is one guy that should always be bearded, so sexy.

Jonah Hill

This was my guy surprise of the night. Who would have thought that "the fat guy from Superbad" as my mom calls him, could clean up so good. He lost some weight and is doing some serious movies now, so I think he's taking it to his full advantage and looking like a real actor. Go Jonah!

Mark Wahlberg

Marky Mark is awesome in Hollywood, be it as an actor or producer. And this boy knows how to layer clothes over his Calvins. Always classic.

Now onto the Best Women:

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace

Like I said before Angie looked amazing in this Aterlier Versace. And I'm sure it was no accident that her lips matched her dress perfectly. Her chignon was perfect too. It was figure hugging without showing off too much. Stunning.

Ariel Winter in Dolce & Gabbana

Who would think that the nerdy sister from Modern Family could look like this? The dress is adorable and the tea length is just perfect for this pretty teenager. This is age appropriate and still fashion forward at its best.

Claire Danes in J. Mendel

Oh Angela Chase. When Claire walked onto the carpet, I was so happy to see her in this great graphic dress. This looked great on her and seemed to suit the grown up Ms. Danes (though I still think of her as Angela).

Dame Helen Mirren in Badgley Mischka

When I grow up, I want to be Helen Mirren. How does a 66 year old still look so good and fashion forward all the time? This Badgley Mischka was so perfect for her. It was so elegant and modern and current, but in no way made her look like an old lady. (Meryl are you taking notes?)

Viola Davis in Emilio Pucci

This woman is just amazing. How she could be the sweet, strong Aibileen in The Help one moment and this beautiful, glamorous actress the next is a testament to her talent. This Emilio Pucci was perfect for her big night. She looked amazing. (P.S. She should have won that Globe!--sorry Meryl)

Here comes the fun, the worst. First, the Worst Men:

William Hurt

You're a nominee, can't you at least comb your hair? There is no excuse. You can buy a comb at any corner drugstore, I'm sure you could have stopped somewhere along the way.

Viggo Mortensen

Viggo looks like he's going to a political fundraiser, not an awards show. Big props for the MLK pin, but what is up with that prep school tie?

Trent Renzor & Atticus Ross

Trent & Atticus have no excuse this year. It's not their first time at the rodeo. You went through this all last year, can we at least get something that fits over your growing belly (Mr. Reznor) and can you do up your tie too (Mr. Ross).

Michael Fassbender

Ok, so maybe you can golf without a club, but you still need to get a jacket that actually fits you properly.

Ed O'Neill

You're one of the stars of one of the biggest comedies on TV in years. Why the need to show up looking like you just rolled out of bed?

And at last, The Worst Women:

Sarah Michelle Gellar in Monique Lhuillier

Some fashionistas may love this dress, but it looks like it was washed with a blue pen that exploded in the wash. I'm just not digging it.

Michelle Williams in Jason Wu

Michelle is not as old as she looks. This dress ages her. I know she can dress well on the carpet, remember that orange dress she wore to the Oscars in 2006? I know you can do better than this Michelle.

Jessica Biel in Elie Saab

Rumor has it that Ms. Biel got engaged over the holidays to her on-again boyfriend, Justin Timberlake. Is she trying to play bride here? She looks like she rummaged through her grandma's attic and found this. Plus she almost has NO makeup on. Come on Jessica, I hope you do better for your real wedding.

Katharine McPhee in Donna Karan

NBC brought out Kat McPhee to show off their new star. And this was her big introduction to the acting world, so why did she wear a dress that looked like it had shrunk? This dress looks like it's missing the bottom of it, and I'm just not a fan of this shade of nude on her. With no jewels or anything else to contrast the look, it just seems so blah.

Charlize Theron in Dior Couture

This is another one I saw the fashionistas online go crazy for. I just don't see it. Too pale, too weird, and it needed a little sparkle at the neck. The sparkly headband was cute, but I think she desperately needed a necklace instead. And this is another girl that needs to get back into color. She's been on a nude kick lately, but girl you need some color in your life.

There you have it. The Globes are over and now we just have to wait for the big show, the Oscars.

New music, at last

So the awesome cold weather we had in Miami this week apparently decided to bring a massive cold with it too.

It was lovely (please note the sarcasm). I stayed home from work for a day, but felt so bad I didn't even get any sewing done. Before the illness took over my body, I was working on a really awesome new bag for myself. I'm hoping to get it done this week, now that I feel human again.

Today, since I finally am able to breathe freely through both nostrils again, I was able to get some stuff done. I took down the Christmas decorations and cleaned up the craft room a bit. But best of all, I finally got the music synced on my Mac to my iPod! I'm so psyched to have the new music to listen to in the car now.

I downloaded the new Lady Antebellum "We Own the Night" forever ago, but haven't listened to anything but the first song. I can't wait to jam to some new Lady A. I know everyone knows about Lady Antebellum after their song "Need You Now" became a huge crossover hit. I really love this group. Their first album is just amazing. I know a lot of people, especially here in Miami, say that they don't like country. But just listen to it. It's a great album, regardless of genre. And don't think of it as country, think of it as great music with awesome harmonies that uses slightly different instruments (an occasional fiddle or steel guitar won't kill anyone, I promise!).

I'm so happy that the iPod is ready to work with the Mac now, so I need new music suggestions. So shoot over anything you just can't get enough of right now, I'm in the mood for some new tunes.

While 2011 is wrapping up, I'm taking Craft:'s call to share my 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 things. So here goes:

One Project You Are Particularly Proud Of

Without a doubt Handmade Miami! I never thought I'd be part of starting a craft group here in Miami, but I'm so glad I did. I still can't believe that in under 2 years it has turned into what it has become. It's given me the chance to teach my craft and learn from so many others. Plus I've met some great people and have made some truly awesome friends. Crafty friends are awesome, they just get you!

Two Mistakes You've Made in the Past
1. Doing the wrong kind of craft shows. I've signed up for tons and some are great and some are not. Now, after all of the experience of doing so many, I can tell which ones are a good fit for me. Without doing the bad shows I would never know what the good ones are though.
2. I gave myself a lovely cut along my thigh while rotary cutting on my bed and accidentally leaving the blade open. I didn't even notice til I saw blood. Thankfully, it wasn't too bad (and I didn't bleed on the fabric). I've learned now to always close the rotary cutter between cuts!!

Three Things That Make Your Work Unique

3. Pinterest. I've become a pinning queen. I have an entire board dedicated to "crafty tutorials I will complete one day."

4. Blogs. I read all kinds of blogs: fashion, food, craft, makeup, just general, but they all inspire me. Seeing what others are doing and/or making really inspires me to get out there and do it too.

5. Old pictures. I have tons of old pics of the family. These pics are awesome real-life inspiration. The fashions and hairstyles are so amazing.

Noche Buena 2011

Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) is when the big dinner is for my family. And it's the typical Cuban/Puerto Rican feast: lechon, congris, yuca, pasteles, pan y ensalada (that's roast pork, black beans and rice--cooked together, yucca, Puerto Rican tamales, bread and salad).

My godfather, Patiti, was doing the pig this year. It was still cooking up in the caja china when we got there. The caja china is a roaster, were you put the pig on a tray and then cover the box and top it with charcoal. This makes a kind of oven and you can roast a whole pork with no problem. Plus it comes out so delicious. While Mr. Piggie kept on cooking, we sat and chatted with the family enjoying some cocktails... some even included my Cranberry-Orange Infused Vokda.

Finally the pig was ready and it was time to get him out of the box. My brother, Angel, and cousin, Marc, helped Patiti get the pig out and then carve it up. It looked so delicious.

Here's a hint if you're ever at a pig roast. Just go take pics of the pig being taken out and you can sneak a taste when the cooks sneak a taste too. It was super hot, but really yummy.

Inside the house in the kitchen, Mom was peeling up some pasteles she had made. Then the rest of the food made it out to the food table and it was time to eat.

Such a great spread! It also included my Mom's famous mojito (not the drink, but the condiment), to pour all over the yuca and the pork.

After dinner we had some shots of coquito. Coquito is kind of like Puerto Rican egg nog but coconut-y and with lots of rum. You take it in small shot form, not a big cup like egg nog. (Sorry I don't have pics of it!)

It was another great Noche Buena with family and delicious food.

Handmade Christmas gifts

Now a year couldn't go by without me making some gifts for the season. So this past Sunday, after I dropped off Grandma at her Christmas sisters brunch, I got busy and got to making my handmade goodies.

I used to make cookies for all of my friends and co-workers every year. But my boss makes these amazing cookies that he's famous for, so I had to switch it up. After making cake pops at the Handmade Miami cake pop crafter-noon we had earlier this year, I though they would make a great gift for my co-workers. So I baked off a chocolate cake and got down to business.

I was browsing Bakerella's site and the Christmas cake pops she had were so cute! I was gonna try to make the reindeer ones, but I forgot to buy the red candies for the noses, so I made the santa hats instead. Once I got the hang of it it wasn't that hard. The worst part was the dipping. After I was all done, I found out that I should've thinned out the candy melts with some shortening. Oh well, maybe next time. I made about 15 santa hats and got over the triple dipping it required, so then I just made round cake pops. I made a full batch, which is about 55 (I got 57, but had a few cake pop casualties along the way).

I wrapped up the cake pops and attached a cute little tag and handed them out at work. Everyone went crazy for them. And how cute do they look?

While my cake balls were chilling, I had time to make some cranberry orange vodka for my friends. I can't take credit for this, it's all Martha. The recipe is so easy. I made two batches and was able to fill the two smaller and one larger bottle. You just have to do this with a few days of advance notice of when you're gifting it, because it needs at least 3 days (the more the better) to infuse.

Knaus Berry Farm

This weekend my parents and I took a drive way down south to Homestead to go to Knaus Berry Farm. It's a farm and they have u-pick strawberries and tomatoes when the season allows. But they also have a farm stand store and the real draw here is the baked goods. They make all kinds of goodies and Mom wanted to get some cinnamon rolls for Christmas breakfast the next week.

We left pretty early to avoid the lines. The lines for cinnamon rolls on the weekends can be really killer there. We waited in line and Mom checked out the local produce they were selling on the other side of the store. It all looked so good.

Once you got closer to the inside of the store you got the smell of all of the baked goods. It's intoxicating. The real draw are the sticky cinnamon and pecan rolls, but they also have jams, local honey, pies and fresh breads. There is also have a little ice cream and milkshake stand too. But 8:30am is just too early to have a milkshake (at least for me it is).

We got to the front and behind the window were racks and racks of cinnamon rolls. It feels like they never ended. We got some to have that day, and Mom got some frozen ones for Christmas day. We also got some Mountaineer bread, which was delicious.

On our way back home, we stopped at Pop's mecca, Harbor Freight. Harbor Freight is to Pop as JoAnn's is to me & Mom. It's a ridiculous huge hardware store, more like a big Ace Hardware than a Home Depot type of place. But unfortunately, they didn't have small mechanic/work gloves that would be able to fit me. :(

After that the smell of warm cinnamon rolls was filling up the car, so we headed home to sample the goodies we bought. That breakfast was well worth the drive and the wait.

Epcot time

Earlier this week, my friend Melissa and I took a little mini-vacation up to Disney World. I love going to Disney World! That was usually our family vacation when I was younger, and I just never get sick of that place.

We stayed on property at the All Star Movies Resort. We were in the Love Bug building.

When we got there on Tuesday, we wentto Downtown Disney to shop a bit and then went over to the Boardwalk fordinner. The Boardwalk is another resort on the Disney property and it was socute. I had only ever been there years ago when I was in college to go to aswing dance at the dance hall there (it was the time that swingers came out).The restaurants were so cute and the atmosphere was great. It was so nice outthere.

The next day we want to Epcot (or Epcot Center, as old school me likes to call it). I'm geeky, so I love thesciencey-ness of Epcot. And we saw it all. All the future world attractions and then we hit the world showcase. We traveled around the world in an afternoon. And even though it was raining, we enjoyed some pastries and wine and saw allof the countries. We got to all of the attractions, well almost all, since theMalestrom was broken when we got there.

It was freezing when we left on Thursday morning (freezing for this Miami-an is 40!). So we bundled up, had some breakfast and got on the road back to Miami. I had such a great time, it was so much fun. I wish we could have stayed longer.

Five Faves: My favorite Christmas movies

I've decided to share some of my favorites, my five faves. Here's the first list, my five fave Christmas movies.

There are so many Chrismas movies on now, that I had to share some of my favorites. These are the movies that it just wouldn't be Christmas without for me. So here in no particular order are my five faves.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)
It isn't really the holidays to me until I see the Grinch on TV. I just love everything about this holiday special. The Grinch is awesome, I love the Whos in Whoville, but my favorite has to be the Grinch's dog. Poor little guy had to pull that heavy sleigh! But the Grinch's heart growing at the end is sure to warm anyone's heart. Christmas isn't about the presents or the tree it's about sharing and being with family.

Scrooged (1988)
No Christmas movie list would be complete without a Christmas Carol interpretation, and this one with Bill Murray is my favorite. Scrooged is Bill Murray at the top of his game (post-Ghostbusters, yet waaay before his comeback). He is hilariously cruel as Frank Cross, the TV exec who is Scrooge to the core. The supporting cast is awesome too. The ghosts of Christmas past and present are great and Bobcat Goldthwait as a disgrunteled ex-employee is just hilarious. By the end he learns the true meaning of Christmas, but there are plenty of laughs on your way there.

Home Alone (1990)
Kevin McCallister is left home alone when his family flies to France for the holidays and he's left home alone. Since he's all alone, he watched movies he's not allowed to (old-school black and white gangster flicks) and orders pizza. He runs around and has fun. He has to defend his house when he realizes two burglars are preparing to rob it. Kevin misses his family though, especially at Christmas. When Kevin rigs the house to defend against the robbers it's awesome. Any kid dreams of setting up traps like that. p.s. If you can watch this with my mom, please do. It makes her laugh hysterically!

The Holiday (2006)
I didn't discover this movie until I caught it on cable by chance, but it has quickly become one of my favorites. Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz (she's my only issue with the movie) trade houses for the holidays to try to escape from their breakups and lives for a while. The life switch is great for both of them Kate's character ends up in Los Angeles and meets Jack Black. Shockingly Jack Black is adorable and charming in this role. Cameron's character ends up in England with Jude Law. 'Nuff said. This movie is just so cute and enchanting and has the feel of those old movies. Definitely check this one out.

Love Actually (2003)
This was billed as the "ultimate romantic comedy" and it is, but it is also my ultimate Christmas movie. It's 9 different storylines (that all connect somehow) all about love at Christmas (though not necessarily because of Christmas. I love all of the stories (though not the Keira Knightly one too much). Bill Nighy is awesome as the aging rocker trying to make a Christmas comeback, and the guy wanting to go to America to get a girl is hilarious too. By the end you're sure to get teary and feel all warm and fuzzy inside. There is a story in here for everyone, so if you haven't seen it, you should.

Now there are a few honorable mentions that just missed the five faves list:

Die Hard (1988)
Hanz Gruber taking over the office building while your wife's Christmas party is going on? John McClane to the rescue. And Bruce Willis has to walk on glass, barefoot. Awesome action movie, and Christmas-y to boot. Yippe ki-yay mother f*cker!

White Christmas (1954)
Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and a young svelte Rosemary Clooney are putting on an act to help save a failing Vermont inn. Of course love happens in the process too. This isn't where the song originated (that was the movie, Holiday Inn--also a great movie), but you'll hear it here too.

And now my house has its halls fulled decked!

I changed it up a bit this year and borrowed my mom's white Christmas tree. Yes I'm a fake tree person, with my allergies I can't imagine how I'd feel with that pine scent in my house for a month. I'd also like to say that whoever decided to make pre-lit trees is a genius. How I hate stringing the lights, but these pre-lit trees are so easy!

Here's my tree all done! I used all red balls and green ribbons. (BTW, my red riding hood cape is the tree skirt!) I think it came out pretty good. It was nice to change it up this year with the white tree. The tree has multicolored lights, so it looks pretty when it's all lit up.

My next decoration was the village. This village takes over the living room coffee table. We have 15 assorted houses. They are all different brands and slightly different scales, but we make them work. Grandma loves having the village out. She actually wants to get some more houses.

I also threw up some garland on the gate that separates the dining and living rooms. I added a few red bows to go with my red decorations on the tree. On the side table there is also a vase that I filled with all of the red poinsettias that we had. I think it's a great way to make a normal vase a little more christmas-y.

The Nativity that we have is too big to put under the tree, so we put it in the foyer. I hang up a pretty garland around the mirror and use the table for the nativity. I also string some lights in the garland and use the rest to give the Nativity some light. It looks so pretty when you walk into the house.

All that's left now is to put the Christmas tablecloth on the table and we're good to go all season. I love having the house all done up. I dread the time it takes, but always love it once it's done. Plus, between Mom, Grandma and I we have so many decorations that we can really change up the look.

Thanksgiving dessert making

I decided this year to change up my normal desserts for Thanksgiving. I decided to make a pumpkin bundt cake with maple glaze--which covers the pumpkin dessert and apple and cherry cup pies (does anyone but me get the Pushing Daisies reference?)--for the pie part.

First the cup pies. I made them in a disposable muffin tins. I figured this would make it easier to get them out of the muffin tin once they were baked. I also used the ready made refrigerated pie crusts. I was experimenting, so easier was better. I rolled out the pie crusts and used the cupcake liners to measure out the crusts and then gently pushed them into the muffin tins.

I made one pan of apple cup pies and one pan of cherry cup pies, so I had 6 of each. I started with the apple pies. For the apple ones I made a variation of the Martha Stewart Mile-High Apple Pie filling that I love so much. This filling is the perfect amount of sweet and tart. So I started prepping the apples.

Here's a tip in case you don't have an apple corer. Just use a 1/4 teaspoon measure to scoop the apple seeds out (kinda like a melon baller). Then once you've quartered the apples, you can make a little diagonal cut to get the rest of the core out. This way of cutting out the core also gives the apple a flat surface to sit on, making cutting the apple slices so easy.

After all the apples were prepped (they were tossed in lemon juice to prevent them from getting brown). I added the sugar, some flour and cinnamon.

Once you mix all of this up the apples start to let off their own juice, so there's no need to cook the filling. I also think the cooked fillings tend to be too sweet, but this one is just the right amount of tart and sweet.

I used 6 apples to make the filling, but that was total overkill. I should have only used 4. But I filled them all up and made cute little pie tops and fluted the edges.

Then I made the cherry cup pies. And yes, I totally cheated and used Comstock cherry filling. It's easy and I like the flavor. But when I topped the pies, I made lattice tops. I figured this gave them a little special-ness and I could tell the pies apart too.

After both pies were filled and topped with their pretty crusts, I put them in the oven. First at 425 degrees for 15 minutes, then I lowered the temp to 350 degrees and let them cook for about 30 minutes longer.

Yeah they bubbled over and some of the crusts aren't too attached, but they look good, and more importantly, they tasted good.

Next came the pumpkin bundt cake. I scoured the internet for ideas on this one. I knew I just wanted a pumpkin cake with a maple glaze. I was looking for something that wasn't too complicated, since I've never made a cake from scratch before and I needed something reliable. I also didn't want to use a pumpkin bread mix, so I figured something with a cake mix base would be easiest. I bought some yellow cake mix and a can of pureed pumpkin. I looked at tons of recipes, but finally took this one, and made a couple of little adjustments.

I mixed everything together poured it in the bundt and put it in the 350 degree oven. It ended up taking about 45 minutes to cook completely.

It made the house smell delicious! When I took it out of the oven it had a very uneven and crag-like top. Since this is a bundt, I knew this would be the bottom, so I didn't mind it. But it also seemed like it weighed a lot when it came out. I thought it might be too dense. So, since no one was gonna see the bottom of the cake, I took a little sample. It was good and wasn't dense at all.

I let everything cool and came back to it in the morning. I released the cup pies from the pans (they came out pretty easy once I got all the over flowing pie filling unstuck). Then I went to unmold my bundt. Thankfully the bundt pan is silicone, cause it wasn't wanting to drop out. So I rolled back the bundt and the cake looked good. I couldn't wait to dig in.

Before dinner I made the maple glaze for the cake. I basically threw some maple syrup in a pot and reduced it. I also added some powdered sugar and a splash of milk. Before it cooled completely I poured it over the cake.

Finally I got to taste everything and boy was it good. The pies were adorable and good as always, but the cake really took the cake (pun intended).

I just want to say on this Thanksgiving Day that I'm so thankful for all I have. For my family who is there for me no matter what and my friends who help me through everything. I'm grateful for a job that I like and for a crafty business that I love working at. I'm grateful to be able to share my love of crafting and spread the love of handmade through my community, and gain some really great friends in the process. I'm grateful for my health and my strength. I'm so grateful for another great year!

my weekend

This weekend I drove up to Orlando to spend some time with some of my best friends.

I hadn't been up to meet their new baby girl yet, so I was able to get tons of time with the little lady, Veronica. Is that not the cutest face ever?! She is a such a sweet and good baby. I can't wait to see her again and watch her get bigger.

And I also wanted to spend time with Veronica's older brother, Xander. He's so awesome and I just love going up to see him. On Saturday, we packed up the kids and took the whole family to Sea World. Xander just loves that place. He couldn't wait to see the dolphins, sharks and Shamu.

He even took my camers and shot a few pics of the dolphins. I think he took better pictures than I did.

After a ride on the kids Shamu roller coaster, Xander wanted to feed the dolphins. So his dad, Eddie, took him as his Mom (Kris), Veronica and I took pics. He gave the dolphin a fish! He was so excited.

After that Kris and I went to ride the Manta. Yeah, that's the roller coaster that you ride facing down. It had been years since either of us had been on a roller coaster. And since there was no line to wait in by the time we went to ride, there was no time to really think about it. So we got on and braced ourselves. It was a freaking blast. So much fun.

On Sunday we ate a yummy homemade breakfast and then the girls went out shopping. We hit an awesome Goodwill store and I got a couple of things, but then it was time for me to head home.

I had a great time in Orlando, as always, and I can't wait to go back and spend more time with them all. How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun?

A little thanks

This past Thursday we had a Thanksgiving lunch at my office, and I planned it this year. This wasn't too complicated, it just involved ordering some catering from Boston Market and putting up our Thanksgiving decorations.

We put up the decorations and tablecloths and set up our buffet. Everyone was good and hungry by the time lunch rolled around. And we all helped ourselves to turkey and all the fixins.

We did have one homemade dish, Elena brought her famous corn casserole. It just wouldn't be the holidays without it!

We were thankful for getting away, at least for a bit, and spending some time together. Happy early Thanksgiving!

Baby shower sewing

Now that I'm craft show free, I'm getting to do some different types of sewing. My mom got an invite for a baby shower of a friend and former co-worker of ours. I've known Marc for what seems like forever and I was so happy that him and his wife, Melissa, were having a little boy. So I had to make something for the new little guy.

Whenever I'm invited to a baby shower I like to make my gifts. It's so much cooler and more personal than buying a generic something from the registry list. I try to make the baby things fun and cool, but still going with the theme that the mommy & daddy seem to be using. Plus, this is me, I like to think that people look forward to my handmade gifts. So I picked up these cute fabrics (the stripes, dots and plaid are cotton and the lime green checks is flannel for the back) and got to work.

I made these cute bibs with the coordinating fabric. And I know you guys may think that I'm obsessed with bias binding (which is true to a certain point), but the bias, in this case, was covering up the fact that I cut the bibs too small. I dBut in the end I like the detail the bias gives the bibs.

Out of the same fabrics, I also made some burp cloths. I added batting to the inside of both the bibs and burp cloths to make them extra cushy and comfy for mommy and baby. I think any baby would love to be burped on these.

I thought the gift needed a little something else. so I snagged these white onesies that Mom had left over from another shower gift. Little girls seem to have the market on cuteness in the clothing department, but who says the little boys can't look dapper too? So I added a bow tie and a long tie to the onesies. Marc & Melissa's little guy will look super cool in these.

I love making these handmade gifts and they were pretty easy to whip up.

Craft Carnival, my own craft show

I knocked another one off of my list! This past Saturday (Nov. 5th) was the Craft Carnival. A craft show that I not only participated in, but also organized from the ground up.

My awesome craft sisters (cause they are more than friends now) from Handmade Miami and I really worked our butts off to get this show to happen. It was our baby and we can't wait to see it grow year after year.

I had Mom and Grandma helping me at my booth. I even finished my items a week before the show! That's a real record for me, but I had a rack full of aprons, and I don't think I would have had any more room if I would have made more.

Mom had an area in my booth too. She made the scarves and cowls that she usually makes, but this time she also made these awesome stuffies! Aren't they cute? The little owls all had their own personalities and the pillow pals were so snuggly

Look at all those vendors in the room! We had about 40 vendors in the show. They sold everything from vintage suitcases to handmade soap and awesome unique jewelry. We were happy to have some first time vendors too, and they had really great items!

Final costume: Come fly with me

I thought I was only doing two costumes this year, til Mom called. She called grandma first to make her a skirt and suit jacket. Then she called me to make a bag. I knew what she had in mind. Mom was gonna be a Pan Am stewardess.

Now I admit, if I would have had more time, this would have totally been up my alley! But I just didn't have time this year. But Mom brought over the bright blue fabric and we got to work. Grandma made the skirt and jacket (and her own pattern, of course), mom made the hat, and I was making the bag.

I made the bag with no pattern, kinda winging it along the way, but I love how it came out. I added a zipper and a gusset and everything. I'm even thinking of making a similar bag for myself.

The biggest obstacle was getting the logo on the bag. If there would have been more time, we would have screenprinted or stenciled the it on. But since this bag was made in a couple of hours, we got creative. I used a printout of the logo that Mom gave me. We put it in a ziploc bag and I pinned it in place. Then I zig-zagged around the edge of the logo and cut away the extra ziploc bag. I wasn't sure this was gonna work, but it did. And it was a great way to get the logo on there quick.

Mom got some little black pumps and white gloves to finish off her look. I think she looks great. I'm sure she was totally the most creative cosutme at the office today.

Halloween costume 2: Red Riding Hood

So I was invited to a Halloween party this week, which meant I had to come up with a costume for me. Someone suggested I go to the store, but I couldn't imagine getting a store bought costume.

So since it was the week before Halloween, and I didn't want to go to the party store or the fabric store, I checked to see what I had at home. I had a ton of red fabric and found some gingham too, so I decided on Red Riding Hood.

I made myself a cute cape with a hood. It was pretty easy, especially since I had a costume pattern for a cape. That helped me get the general idea of how to make the cape, and then I modified it to work with the amount of fabric that I had. I also made a simple skirt in gingham to give me that "I'm walking throught the forest" feel. I added a red sash, cause I needed to break up the black a bit. (And I'm totally wearing a black tank top, cause it was rainy and HOT!... this is Miami after all) Not bad for a two hour costume. I added a pair of red heels, and I was ready to go!

The next day I had a crafty Halloween get-together, and my friends and I decided to go in costume. So, I switched out my red heels for my red glitter flats that I made at a Crafter-noon. I also took my potluck goodies in that basket I'm holding. I think it was the perfect touch.

I did get asked where my big bad wolf was a time or two, so next time I may need a sucker to dress up alongside me. I really loved this costume, it was cute and comfy!

I received a special request for another costume accessory for yet another costume, so you'll see that in tomorrow's post.

Costume time

It's that time of year, and even with the Craft Carnival the week after Halloween I've actually managed to make some costumes this year. Well, I've made one so far, and plan on making another this week.

My first costume was Jake from "Jake and the Neverland Pirates." My newphew Xander asked for this costume, so I had to make it for him! This costume wasn't too complicated, it was just about the details.

I just made some basic elastic pants, and then a black belt. Since I didn't have Xander to measure here with me, I made the belt adjustable with velcro. And he'll be able to use it for dress up for a long time. The head sash was also super easy. Just a strap with some topstitching.

The vest and the boots were really where I got to so the details. I adjusted a vest pattern to make the lapels bigger and then trimmed it in handmade bias binding. The buttons were just that same fabric wonder-undered to the vest and then zig-zagged around the edges.

I wanted to make boot covers for him to wear over his sneakers. I couldn't find a pattern for this in the stores, but I finally found one online. I made them out of felt, so they would stand up and I added a cuff, since Jake has cuffs on his boots. Then i made the buckles out of the same fabric as the buttons and wonder-undered and zig-zagged the edges too. Some velcro in the back and elastic on the bottom and they were ready to go.

I just shipped up his costume, so I hope his Mom gets some really good pics of him wearing it for me. I can't wait to make his costume next year and one for his new little sister too!

I also plan on making myself a costume before Friday. I was invited to a Halloween party by one of my co-workers, so I need a costume STAT! I'm thinking of doing Little Red Riding Hood. I have tons of red fabric, so it should be pretty easy to whip up tonight. Just a cape (a short one) and I can wear a little dress underneath. Now there might be a hurricane coming this way for Friday or Saturday, so the costume might not even end up being used, but at least I'll have it all done. I hope to show off my costume in a couple of days.

Now I admit I tried to do this when I turned 30, but overall, that year was just a big ol' mess, and I just didn't have the time or drive to really get it done. But I'm only a few months (4 to be exact) past my 32nd birthday, so I'm gonna go for it. So here goes....

Making labels

Lots of my crafty friends ask me how I make the labels that I put on everything I make. It's actually pretty easy to make them yourself. So since I'm making more labels to continue making all of my stock for the Craft Carnival, I thought I'd show you how I do it.

I have a file already set up where I can print 36 labels on one sheet. I set it up in photoshop to make the labels about 1" x 2". My labels are just my company logo and my website address underneath it. This way if you lose the business card I include in most orders, you can see the site on your actual items.

I use pritable fabric to make the labels. This is the brand I use, you can find it at JoAnn's. I usually get it with a coupon, so I think it comes out to about $3-4 for a pack of 6 sheets (which comes out to like 1 cent per label). There are different types of fabric you can choose from, but I like to get the cotton poplin. Since I work with mostly cotton, I like that it's the same as what the rest of the material is. And the poplin isn't thick, so it doesn't create bulk where the label is sewn on.

Next all you have to do is put it in your printer and print. You don't have to change it to be the mirror image (like you do with iron on transfers). I don't even change the paper settings. The one thing you have to pay attention to, is to make sure you are printing on the fabric side of the sheet. There is one side of the sheet that is paper and the other side it fabric, so just make sure you are printing on the fabric side.

Now that they're printed, you can peel them off of the backing paper. (If you have a different brand, just follow the manufacturer's instructions). At this point my instructions have me rinse the fabric under water until it runs clear. This is just to get the extra ink off of the surface. I never have to rinse for too long. Then you have to dry the fabric sheet. I start my drying by placing the sheet between some towels, and then finish off the drying with an iron--cause I'm impatient like that.

After your label sheet is all dry you can start cutting them out. I like to use a ruler and rotary cutter, cause it makes it so easy to get the whole sheet cut out pretty fast.

Now here's one of my secrets. Since the fabric is woven and will start to fray, I seal all of the edges with fray check. The fray check keeps the fraying at a minimum and dries clear, so you can't even tell it's there. This is the most time consuming part of the process, since you have to fray check all four sides of the label. But just sit back and watch some TV and you'll be done in no time. When I'm done applying the fray check, I also lay the labels out flat to dry. If you stack them all up when the fray check is still wet, the edges will dry together, and then you have to pull them apart. It won't take too long for the fray check to dry on these.

When you're all done, you'll have a little stack of your own labels ready to be sewn into everything you make. It really gives your handmade items a little polish to have your labels sewn into them. And making them yourself is way less expensive than having those custom labels printed.

I hope this helps all you crafty business people out there. And even if you are just making a gift, having your name in there lets the person know that you're the one that made it. I think it's a great little touch to include one on everything you make. Do you put labels in the things that you make?

Crafting up a Carnival... and other things too

As I mentioned before, along with my group, Handmade Miami, we're putting on the Craft Carnival this November. It's totally a labor of love. We got our postcards this week! Don't they look great? We gave the graphic designer a bunch of images and had him pick the ones that would work best. I was happy to see he picked some of mine.

But along with running Handmade Miami and our monthly Crafter-noons (not to mention our business workshop this weekend), actually working full-time and the Carnival, I feel like I've been neglecting poor designed by Diana! It was time to give my business some love.

So, last weekend I got back into the sewing for dbD. I figured I should finish making my things to sell at the Carnival early, since I'll have a LOT of last minute things to coordinate. And I'd love to make some goodies from designed by Diana to giveaway in the swag bags too.

This week, I've managed to made about 20 pouches! I was totally ready to sew up the 10 others I had already cut out, but as luck would have it, I had no more labels to sew into them. I went over to my printer to print them out and keep going, but, of course, I had no ink in my printer. And if you are anything like me, I drag my feet to get ink. It's so expensive (if anyone has tips on where to find cheaper HP ink, let me know). But I've been on a roll this week, so I figured I might as well get the ink on my lunch break. At least I only need color, so I only have to buy one cartridge.

Since I didn't want to lose my crafting momentum last night I got started making the swag bag items that Handmade Miami will be giving away at the Craft Carnival. It was all going great. I was using my rotary cutter and cutting them out while sitting on my bed and watching TV. Everything was going great, but then I grabbed my rotary cutter from my lap, and cut my leg. Now I've cut my fingers before with the rotary cutter, but never my leg! Note to self (and to all of you too!): close the rotary blade unless you are using it! The cutter had a new blade in it, but I didn't think of anything since it didn't hurt. Then when I got up and saw the blood on my leg, I thought it might be band-aid time.

So the band-aid is covering my craft-related injury and I'm ready to get back to work. I'm also gonna whip up some Halloween costumes for my nephew and niece this weekend, so I can send it to them before October. Those are gonna be adorable, so I'll be sure to post pics.

Cute baby stuff

One of my best friends, Kristina, is having a little girl. So I went up to see her in Orlando for the baby shower a couple of weeks ago.

When Kris and I started talking about the shower she asked me for something. She wanted me to maker her a new baby bag. So after some online browsing and finding the right fabric, I made her this. It's HUGE and so roomy inside. It's got tons of pockets to keep all that baby stuff handy, plus since it's all cotton, it's totally washable. And it's sure to say that no one else will have this bag! Gotta love custom handmade!

Now I couldn't just make the bag, my new niece needed a cute outfit too. So using my Martha Stewart Encyclopedia of Sewing, I made the baby kimono in this great bright print.

The little bows are too cute for words. And since it called for bias binding, I was in luck, since I always have some extra rolling around my studio.

Now we girls know that no outfit is complete without a pair of shoes. And the Martha Stewart felt booties are the easiest things to whip up and so freaking cute. I think she might get a few more pairs before she's ready for big girl shoes!

I had a few other projects that I wasn't able to finish up before the shower, but I'll have them done soon.

And I hope to post some pics of the shower too, since I hosted it and I have to say it was awfully cute!

The Craft Carnival

It's always been a dream of mine to put on my own craft show. It'd have an indie crafts vibe and be right here in Miami.

When I started Handmade Miami with Frances, Julie and Vanessa, we often talked about this and putting a show together ourselves. Well I am happy to say that finally our dream is becoming a reality.

Along with Handmade Miami, I'm proud to present the Craft Carnival!! This is gonna keep me pretty busy til November, but it's definitely a labor of love.

... so can you help me with this?

This is something I hear from people a lot. Luckily, I most of the time it's something I can totally do, so it's no problem to help.

This time the question was asked by one of my co-workers. She asked me to make a dress for a mini-dressform she had bought. She was gonna use it as a decoration for a quinces. Cute idea, I thought. So I told her this shouldn't be a problem, but when did she need it? She told me the next day! I was busy making the Handmade Miami aprons, but she was really wanted it, since the quinces was a spur of the moment thing, and she wanted to make it special for the birthday girl.

So I took home the dress form ans tried to formulate a plan. I decided to make it a cute strapless dress, that looked like something a teenager would wear to a party. A couple of seams on the machine, and then a combination of hand stitching and hot glue made the dress come together. Then I added a brown stain ribbon to tie the colors of the party together (brown and pink) and give the dress a finished look.

This little dressform (which is actually a jewelery stand) is going to be used as a kind of guestbook. There will be little tags where you can write your wishes for the birthday girl and then hang them on the hooks at the bottom of the skirt. It's such a cute idea!

I was slightly amazed at how easy this idea and the actual execution was. I work well under pressure I guess. How do you like my first foray into tiny dressmaking?

Summer Cousins Pool Party

Last Saturday night was the cousins get-together I was hosting at my house. I'm so happy to say it was success, even though there were a few bumps along the way.

The day started out great, the sun was out and shining. I cleaned up the pool area and then came inside to chill a bit before the cousins started arriving. My brother, Richard, came over a bit early to help me set up the new canopy we had for the pool. We started to pull out the new pop up canopy and the rain began. At first it wasn't that bad, but then it really started coming down. We went back inside with the canopy only half up. When the rain subsided a bit, we went back outside to finish putting up the canopy. I didn't want it to get broken due to all the water accumulating in the half up canopy. So we were able to get it up, but the rain kept coming.

The cousins started arriving, and the rain kept coming down, so we gathered in the kitchen and talked while munching on the snacks everyone brought. A little while later, Angel, my other brother, let us know that the rain had stopped, so we moved the party outside. We all grabbed the snacks and everyone got their bathing suits on and we were able to enjoy the pool. And I even got to pull out the cute lanterns I had bought to decorate the canopy with.

It was so much fun and really the first time my generation of the cousins had a party just for us. I spent all day receiving calls from moms and grandmas asking if this party was really going on (somehow they doubted us... LOL), but it did and it was great. We totally need to do another cousins party soon!

It's been a month?

I can't believe it's been a month! I'm sorry to my very few readers. But I've been crazy busy. And the heat. I have to blame the heat, it is the middle of summer after all.

I can now officially say that my fab group Handmade Miami is putting on its very first craft show. It's called the Craft Carnival! It will feature some of the most awesome indie crafters in South Florida, along with food, games, raffles and even a DIY table so you can make and take your own crafts! It's being held on November 5th at the Miami Elks Lodge from noon to 5pm. I'll be posting tons more when the date gets closer.

It seems like the Craft Carnival is taking up so much time, but I'm also juggling planning a new party. I'm hosting a baby shower for one of my best friends, Kristina. She's having her second baby, a little girl, so we're getting ready for her by showering her with gifts. As usual I'm doing a LOT of DIY for this shower, but having so much fun doing it. I can't wait to post all the pics when I'm done.

And tonight I'm hosting a little pool party/get-together for me and my cousins. I wasn't gonna do any decorating, but now I'm thinking up some simple decorations to make and put out by the pool. I'll definitely post these when they're done.

Eight weeks to a better me: Week Eight

The last week is here! I can't believe it. It's all gone by so fast.

Now let's get onto this week's theme: awakening your creative side. This is something I need a push with lately. With all of the things going on with Handmade Miami, it's hard getting the sewing in for me. But I feel like I'm getting back into the groove of things and this week's goal will really help. So here go my:

1. Make more stuff! Actually making things makes me get back into the groove and want to continue making things. Today I made myself a skirt, and I think that the bag that I have in my mind to make will have to be my next project. I also have a stack of already cut aprons waiting to be put together.
2. Check out my Pinterest. There are tons of cool projects that I've pinned, but I never seem to go back and check them out. I have to go look at them and maybe tackle one.
3. Use my color inspiration list. I've been keeping a list of cool color combinations I see on my phone. Now I just have to put the colors to use in a project.

I hope everyone gets a chance to wake up their creative side this week. What creative stuff have you been up to lately?

I made a new skirt

I finally made myself a new piece of clothing. This was a pretty easy project and took a couple of hours to finish (it only took me that long cause I took pictures along the way).

I used Simplicity 2286. I was going to make view B with the pockets, but I omitted the pocked for ease and so I wouldn't spend all afternoon matching up stripes. I used this nice cream linen with grey stripes that we found when we sorted through all of the fabric in the garage.

I laid out my fabric and cut out the three pieces: front, back and two waistbands. Then I just sewed everything up. There are only two seams on this skirt, and then the gathering and attaching to the waistband. This is a great project for someone just learning to sew.

After sewing the side seams I took the skirt to the serger to clean up the edges. If you've ever worked with linen before you know that it frays like crazy, so the serger was a definite plus for this project. Luckily, the serger was already threaded with white, so I saved myself the two hour ordeal of changing the thread on the machine. (Now I know that normally changing your serger thread should not take that long, but whenever I do it, I seem to run into a problem and have to re-thread the whole machine.)

After finishing the edges, I gathered the skirt and attached it to the waistband. I threaded through some elastic and then did a small hem. This skirt is kinda short. So I did a very little hem, not the one inch the pattern said to do. If you ever make this pattern, you may want to give it a little extra length, so you can then adjust to your taste.

I was pretty much done with the skirt, so I stepped out to have Grandma to a quick check of the hem. I wanted to make sure it at least looked straight. She said it did, so I was good to go. This was such an easy skirt and it's so comfy. I think I may make another one maybe with the pockets. This one will definitely be making it to work this week.

Eight weeks to a better me: Week Seven

Craziness around here, so I'm a week late on this week's post. But I do really love the theme for this week: personal style. I don't feel I have a definitive style, but I am trying to hone in on one. If I could describe it, I'm going for a style that is creative and fun with a retro twist. From what you've seen on here, does that make sense with what you see?

So here are my style goals (which I kinda did last week, but will continue this week too):

1. Wear more skirts and dresses. I did this a lot this past week. With the scorching heat here in Miami, a dress is such an easy comfy way to get through it while still looking cute.
2. Expand my accessory wardrobe. I need some new earrings and necklaces to wear. Though I'm really loving the new pendant I made at a recent Crafter-noon.
3. Make myself a new item of clothing. I have a pattern for an easy skirt that I got at a craft party and I have some striped fabric that I think will work. I may have to make this skirt tomorrow, so I can wear it to work this week

I've been a slacking blogger! I've just been so crazy busy the last couple of weeks, I haven't had a moment to site and blog about the insanity.

First off, I'm sad to say that my craft room hasn't improved. But there is a really good reason. Last Friday, June 10th, I along with my Handmade Miami chicas hosted Etsy Craft Party and Handmade Miami's 1st Birthday Party! It was so great to have new people come out and share their love of craft. But it was just amazing to realize that Handmade Miami is one year old. We've done so much in one short year and we've really made the handmade community in Miami come together.

The day right after that was one of my best friend's birthdays. We went to the mall to get a new outfit and along with some friends we took the fabulous Melissa out to dinner for her birthday. And today, June 17th we did a community service project at work. We spent the day cleaning up a beach. It was great to give back and even though it was really, really hot, you can't complain when this is your view at work. But now I am dead tired! Man that sun can really zap your energy.

And in between all of that I've been planning something for Handmade Miami. It's pretty big and super exciting. It's gonna get really hectic around here really fast, but in a good way. As soon as I can spill the beans about the good news I will (and trust me I'm dying to tell everyone!)

8 weeks to a better me: Week Six

Week 6! I don't even think I can believe it. I'm having so much fun doing this project from Sometimes Sweet.

This week's theme is "home sweet home," which I absolutely love. I absolutely love decorating. When I had my own place, I'd always spend time looking for things to make it truly reflect me. Now I live with my grandma, so I mainly let her style dictate, but I've been wanting to make my little corner of the house more me. So here's the perfect excuse to get started!

1. Tidy up/prettify my vanity area in the bathroom. I started to do this a few weeks back, but never really got it going.
2. Get my craft room more presentable looking. Another project that began a while ago. I really just want to have everything have a place and put some of my cute things out on display. It's not too messy, but I'm sure cleaning up a bit will help.
3. Find a frame for my "Keep Calm and Sew On" print. A friend of mine made it for me to go into my craft room, so now all I need is a frame and I can hang it up.

This week's goals seem fun. I'll definitely be posting pics of the craft room once it's all done.

8 weeks to a better me: Week Five

I know I'm a little late this week, but Memorial Day weekend just threw me off. Plus I've been super busy planning fun stuff for Handmade Miami. But here we go with this week's goals.

This week's goals kinda threw me for a loop. I had no idea what to do. But I did finally figure out what to do. So here are my goals for loving life and having fun!

1. Get some sewing done for me! I'm in desperate need of a new bag. So it's time to whip one up for myself. Having a brand new handmade bag to tote my stuff around in is always great. Plus inventing a new bag is so fun.
2. Go catch a movie. There are so many movies that I want to go see, so I just gotta go and see them. I may just sneak out to the movies by myself this weekend... popcorn and a flick in the a/c sounds nice.
3. Take time to enjoy all the stuff I'm planning. My schedule is crazy hectic with all of the things I'm planning and doing. I gotta take time to have fun and take pics when the events actually come around.

I have a homework assignment for everyone... get out there and have fun this week!

World's Easiest Key Lime Pie

Now this is not my recipe, but it's a recipe that's so easy to make that both my mom and I make it all the time. It's cold and refreshing and perfect for summer.

Here is the original recipe from the food network. All you need is a graham cracker crust, sweetened condensed milk, cool whip and limes. After making this pie a time or two, Mom and I have come up with a few tips on how to make it. First, combine the lime juice and condensed milk, then fold in the whipped topping. This makes it so much easier to get it all combined. I also like to add some lime zest right into the pie filling and sprinkle some on top of the pie too, for nice specks of green throughout. Then just pour into the crust and freeze.

This is a great treat for the summer and the perfect dessert for any picnic or barbeque. I hope you enjoy it (especially since it's so easy to make) and have a great summer!

8 weeks to a better me: Week Four

Week 4 is here. Wow, we are half way through this thing already. Last weeks goals came at the right time for me. It really helped me out with my workouts and I totally am feeling better/fitter!

Now this weeks goals are all about loving yourself. I consider myself pretty self-confident. But we do all have our moments. This week setting the goals has been the hardest for me, but here goes...

1. Get rid of clothes that doesn't fit/isn't me! I still have a bunch of clothes that just doesn't fit me. It also feels like that clothes is from another life. So it's time for it to get out and go to the Goodwill. I only want clothes that feels and looks like me and that makes me feel great.
2. Take a little time for me. I'm always juggling so much, I need to carve out time to just chill. I forsee a pedi for myself this week.
3. Accept all of me. When I was younger I hated having red hair. I was different and that was so not fun being called Strawberry Shortcake and Pippi Longstocking. Now that I'm older I know my red hair is one of the things that makes me unique and totally me. I have to accept all of me that way... my stomach pooch and all.

Kitchen Curtains

So to go with our pretty new kitchen (we just had new cabinets installed), grandma had been wanting a new curtain for the window. So we headed out to JoAnn's earlier in the week and found the perfect fabric. It has a beige background with veggies all over it. It totally compliments all of her kitchen accessories which have fruits and veggies on them too.

She had seen a curtain in the Anna's Linens flyer and wanted to copy the shape. It was cafe curtains at the bottom with a valance that was longer on the sides. I think it came out great. She even added some rick-rack along the edges, which gave it a perfect touch.

When we were getting the fabric, Grandma, in all her genius, decided to buy all of the fabric that they had (maybe about 4 yards). With the rest of the fabric she made a cute tablecloth for the little kitchen table. She trimmed it with rick-rack too. It looks so cute.

So what do you think of our kitchen curtains? I love home dec projects. They are so easy and quick to whip up. Our next project will probably be new curtains for my bedroom.

Grandma's fabric stash

I know almost every crafter I know has a stash, some small, but most of the times really big. I did a minor cleaning to my stash not too long ago, and it was so nice to be able to fit all of the fabric I had into one dressser.

This weekend I told my grandma I'd help her whittle down her huge fabric stash. we had some of the old cabinets from the kitchen put into the garage to hold all her fabrics. We just hadn't filled them up yet. After some breakfast, we go into the garage (which is her sewing space) and got down to business.

This mess of fabric on the floor is not even half of what she had. Since she made custom clothing for so many years there were tons of different kinds of fabrics. Satin, crepe, piques, poly blends, organzas, silks, tons of linings, and even some heavy duty cotton (from when she made scrubs). Since I make mostly aprons, wallets and pouches, I only have scraps that are less than a yard sometimes. But grandma had tons and tons of yardage. We found one cut of home dec fabric that was over 20 yards!

As she pulled out the fabric we had 4 piles: keep, trash, give to her sister and keep to make clothes for us. When we were done we filled up an entire pantry sized cabinet. We spent all day sorting and folding, but it was well worth it. We found so much stuff we didn't know we had in there. I found enough fabric to make myself 3 or 4 dresses. We also found tons of notions and a lot of lace.

Anyone jealous of her stash? We're affectionately calling it "the store" now, cause we have almost enough fabric to open our own fabric store.

So after getting a coupon on Couptessa, I snagged myself a cut, treatment, style and blowdry for about $50. I wasn't looking for anything drastic, I just wanted to give my mop some shape and get it out of looking so blah.

I grabbed the first appointment of the day last Thursday, since I'd be going to Orlando later that afternoon. The fabulous Gus asked me what I wanted done, and he totally got what I wanted. He gave me tons of layers and thinned it out a little so it wouldn't get too poufy. Gus also suggested a side sweep to frame my face better. I love it. Plus, I still have plenty of length left, so I can do all of my crazy vintage hairstyles.

Here I am fresh out of the salon, all blow-dryed and fabulous.

I feel awesome with my new hair! It's so much lighter which always helps in the 90 degree plus weather, plus it looks so cute. Don't you love how a great new do makes you feel?

8 weeks to a better me: Week Three

Last week due to the Everglades being on fire and the smell of smoke in the air, I wasn't able to get on my bike. But I plan on getting a ride in tomorrow morning.

Now onto this weeks goals which are all about Healthy Eating. I've been trying to eat healthier to go along with my exercise. So this set of goals seems to be coming at a perfect time for me. So here goes...

1. Drink more water (at least 2 of my bottle-fuls a day)! I always seem to have problems with especially when I get home from work. At work I have a water cup next to me all day and am able to get through at least two 16oz. glasses a day. Now I have to keep it up at home.
2. Eat better breakfasts. I have to make time to get my breakfasts at home instead of on the way to work. I have much more healthful options here.
3. Have healthy snacks on hand. This is another big one. Grabbing chocolate when I need that snack at 3pm at work just won't do. I'll pick up fruit and nuts and other healthy things to keep at my desk.

I'm having a great time reading other people's goals and seeing how their 8 weeks are chugging along. So how are your goals going?

Orange-y Tunic Top

So here it is the top I made on Easter. I'm so happy I finally got around to making this.

I didn't make any alterations to the pattern. I used the smallest size, and though I thought the armholes would be too big, they weren't. I've learned to accept the fact that the ruching in the yoke is a mess. I'm loving the graphic print and the bright red-orange.

I'm always super intimidated when making clothing. I hem and haw and put it off forever. But next time I have to just jump in and do it. Once I get started it's always easier than what I had thought.

I plan on making a nice easy summer dress next, with help from Grandma. I'll have a details on the construction of that one, cause I want her to show me how to make it from scratch. (EEK!)

8 weeks to a better me: Week Two

It's time again for the week's goals. I'm so glad I got my 3 posts in last week. I hope to be able to keep that up from now on. So let's move on to this weeks goals, which are about fitness.

1. Workout at least 5 days this week. The Friday-Sunday time span is always hard for me.
2. Get some more workout clothes! I'm in dire need of them. I've started working out more, and I just need more clothes to wear to do this.
3. Ride my bike this week. I've had it since Christmas, but have barely ridden it. I think I may take it for a spin on Tuesday night before it gets dark.

Art Rock 2011

This year I attended Art Rock, which is another great show put on by Amanda of Stitch Rock. Now this show is more geared towards artists, so designed by Diana really didn't fit the bill. But I convinced (okay maybe strong-armed is a better word) my friend and awesome artist, Eddie Beis, to apply.

This was Eddie's first show, but I told him there was no need to worry, I'd help him every step of the way. So after weeks of back and forth emails, he was finally ready-ish. He had some prints and stickers and some original pieces too. Plus he was doing custom stickers and drawings while you waited.

After I got there with the tablecloths, we set up the table and got ready for the doors to open. I walked around to say hi to some of my crafty friends, then came back to help Ed at his table. Lots of people came by and talked to Ed about his art. He even talked to some aspiring artists and gave them some tips. So many people had such great things to say about his art. It was awesome to see all of the people interested. He got one person who wanted a commission and another that wanted a drawing on the spot. It was awesome.

I'm so glad Eddie got to do this show. I know next year he'll do even better. This was my first time at Art Rock and it was so great to see all the awesome art that comes from local people.

Sweetness Bake Shop & Cafe

A little over a year ago, Sweetness Bake Shop & Cafe opened its doors just around the corner from my house. I noticed the cute little bakery and planned last year's Etsy party there. And from my first taste of their cupcakes, I was hooked. Sweetness is a true family business with a whole family working together to make all of the delicious sugary sweets.

When you walk into the Sweetness you get a look at the day's cupcakes, but at the Sweetness it's not just your run-of-the-mill cupcake flavors. They have 5 house flavors that appear every day: Thrilla in Vanilla (vanilla with vanilla buttercream), Chocolate Cubed (chocolate cake with chocolate chips and chocolate buttercream), Red Velvet (with cream cheese frosting), Guayabera (guava cake with guava maramalade and cream cheese frosting) and Oreo Overload (oreo cake with oreo buttercream). Each day you also get 3 special flavors which are always rotating and on special days are even themed. I was there on Cinco de Mayo, so they had Tequila Sunrise (with real tequila), Margarita cupcakes (also spiked with booze), Cinn City and Churros con Chocolate. Just follow them on twitter or facebook to find out the day's flavors. The cupcakes are all amazing, plus they are mini-sized, so you can try more than one flavor without getting sugar overload. And at about a dollar a piece, you can't beat that.

But Sweetness isn't just all about the cupcakes. They also have dessert shots (black forest cake is my favorite!), cakes, pies, cheesecakes, pretty much anything you can think of, but they all have that Sweetness slant on it. And the G.O.A.T. cookies are just insane! G.O.A.T. stands for greatest of all time, and that is the truth. They are chocolate chip cookies on the outside and have a gooey, fudgy center. So freaking good!

Sweetness also has a food truck called the Sugar Rush. Though I haven't visited the Sugar Rush yet, they are stocked with the best of the Sweetness and some truck-only specials like deep fried cupcakes and cake and shake milkshakes.

I couldn't help it... I had to eat one!

Besides the fact that they make all sorts of deliciousness, the best part of the Sweetness is the people. They are just so nice and really get to know you. It's great in a big city like Miami to have that mom-and-pop shop feeling when you go somewhere. They are also super supportive of Handmade Miami, and we've had a few workshops and crafter-noons there. We will also be holding the Etsy Craft Party and Handmade Miami 1st Anniversary at the Sweetness on June 10th.

If you are ever in Miami, I totally recommend hitting up the Sweetness. It's not in the glitzy touristy areas like South Beach or the Design District, but you'll get to see what the locals really love. And taste the delicious sweet treats that they have in store for you!

Appreciating the Miami Heat

And I'm not just talking about our fabulous basketball team that just won game 2 of their series against the Celtics! White Hot HEAT! (Sorry for all you haters... hehe)

I'm talking about the actual heat outside, which right now is 86 degrees, but feels like so much more. It's pretty much officially been summer here for at least about 3 weeks now. Going out to lunch is a struggle of heat and trying not to sweat to death before getting back into the car.

But I did have a stroke of luck today. Being a natural redhead, the sun and I are not good friends. Last summer I lost my beloved straw hat that I use for the pool, beach or really anything that involves being outside. Well I just found a great new replacement! Do you like it? I def need this for my hanging at the pool this weekend, which is what my mom wants to do for Mother's Day on Sunday. Plus it's pretty plain, which means I can jazz it up with some DIY flowers or even a cool fabric band to match every outfit.

Now this fabulous hat has to be one way that I can appreciate the Miami sun and heat. Cause wearing something like this in the midwest just might be a bit odd, but poolside, looks just right.

Royal Wedding Day

After months of waiting it finally was time. Royal Wedding Day! We got to see a normal girl become a princess (more accurately the Duchess of Cambridge). And we finally got to see the dress!

I was one of the people that woke up at 4am (EDT) to watch the events live. I saw the Beckhams arrive as well as Elton John and David Furnish. I saw Wills and Harry leave Clarence House and Kate get into her car. I dozed off during the sermon, but other than that watched the whole thing. It was so cool to see it. My mom told me she was up with me to watch Charles & Diana's wedding, but I was a baby, so I don't remember it. It was great to see the pomp and circumstance, but the touches that Will and Kate made to make this day their own.

Now onto the dress. I thought it was gorgeous. Not at all what I expected of Alexander McQueen's design house, but it suited Kate. The lace kept it romantic, but it was still a modern take on it. I also loved the understated Cartier tiara borrowed from the Queen. And her bouquet was so pretty. I loved that it was small. I have a feeling this is gonna be a huge bridal trend now.

My mom mentioned to me that Kate's dress looked like her wedding dress. And after looking at them I have to agree. Trends definitely are cyclical. My mom's dress was handmade by her mom and grandmother. It was also hand beaded with lace appliques. It had a sweetheart neckline with lace overlay, lace appliques around the bottom of the skirt and even lace around the veil. My dad even noticed the similarities! (And yes that's him pimpin' in his white tux.)

Now wedding day didn't stop there, I put on my HumbleBumbleB fascinator and took my other hats and fascinators to work. Most of the hats where handmade by me. The girls in my department and I wore our hats, royal wedding style! They all loved the hats and fascinators and couldn't get over how cute they were. We also had cake and chocolates to celebrate. I got a lot of double takes when people passed by my desk, but I do love wearing my hat, and the other girls did too.

By the end of the day I was tired from my very very early morning, but I was so happy I got to see the wedding. Cheers and all of the happiness in the world to William and Kate! Did you do anything special for royal wedding day?

A DIY Easter

Happy Easter everyone! It was a nice lazy day at home for me (finally!). But I was able to get a project done.

After helping with some yard work, I was able to make the top I had been planning to make forever. I bought the fabric months. I got inspired by a top I saw on ModCloth, which, of course, is now no longer available, so I can't show you my inspiration. I wanted a top that wasn't knit (since most of the tops I have now are). So I bought this pretty sheer fabric at JoAnn's. I also bought some pongee lining, which is pretty much the same weight. I made Simplicity 2892 view E. It was labeled 6 made easy, and it was for the most part.

This top is only a few pieces: front, back, front yoke, back yoke, and two pieces of lining for the front and back of the yoke. I cut it out and putting it together was going pretty smooth, until I had to gather the yoke. I stitched around the edge with my largest machine stitch and started gathering. It was a huge mess of gathers and I almost gave up on it. After showing my aunt and grandmother, they said it looked great, so I left the gathers in. The part that took me the longest was hand-stitching the yoke lining, but in the end it was worth it. This is a super cute and comfy tunic tank that I hope to wear to work soon.

In the middle of my top making, I stopped my work to make the macaroni and cheese I was making for dinner. I use this super simple recipe. I've tried a few baked mac & cheese's that use a bechamel sauce as they base and they never seem to be cheesey enough for me. But this one is perfect, cheesey and so simple. I add some crumbled crackers to the top after I uncover it to give it a crispy topping. I used saltines this time (cause it's what was in the pantry), but I've used Ritz crackers before and that is super yummy.

I hope you all had a great Easter and got to work on some crafty projects this weekend too. I'm so happy with my top, that I have to stary planning my next clothing project.

Churchy Crafting

It's a week before Easter and when I got to my Mom's house this Sunday morning, she had her palms from church (since this Sunday was Palm Sunday).

I asked her if she was going to do anything with them, and she told me she would of course be making them into crosses before they got too dry. So I asked her to make them while I was there so I could take some pics.

These are made with a single palm frond. You just whip them around and do some palm origami and voila in no time you can have a cross or anything else you can make. Some people get more complicated or have to use two fronds to make a cross, but you can do it with one.

Now after 13 years of Catholic school, I've made my fair share of palm crosses. You always struggle to remember how to start at first, but then it all comes back to you, every Palm Sunday. Now it's a little known fact that this craft is always done better while in church. The palms are always freshest and most pliable when you first get them, so if you want to make anything from them the earlier the better.

Now I'm off to see if I can hijack my Mom's DVD of Jesus Christ Superstar, so I can watch it before Easter. Cause nothing says Easter like a rock opera. :)

Odd Duck Bazaar 2011

Now that my internet is back, I can finally tell you about the great show I did last weekend. It was the second annual Odd Duck Bazaar hosted by the Hollywood Craft Mafia. This was a great show that I attended last year, and am so happy to have been a vendor this year.

Odd Duck was held in the Old Davie School. It's a historic building in Davie, Florida (near Ft. Lauderale) and it was a great location. There were three shopping areas, the upstairs area, a downstairs area, and outside under the tent. And then the tiki hut was where the food and DIY area was. All of the spaces had great vendors. I was in the upstairs area and had some great neighbors, Sherry from Annie's Cupboards and Tiffany from Pumpkin Pye Boutique. The upstairs room was nice and bright with all of its large windows, but best of all was air-conditioned. I really appreciated it in the South Florida springtime.

With my trusty assistant, Mom, we set up the booth. I got some new stuff for my booth set up, to go along with my new banner with the new logo on it. We hung up all the aprons and before you knew it the customers started pouring in. The line was pretty long full of customers waiting to get in. And they didn't stop coming in all afternoon!

I got a chance to walk around the show a bit to go around and see all of my crafty friends. It was so nice to see so many of them in person instead of on Facebook. As I walked around I got compliments on my hair. I did it up in some big victory rolls to get that 40s look. And even with all that humidity, my hair held up pretty well.

I do have to say that one of my favorite customers of the day was my friend Vanessa's little girl, Sophia. Sophie loved her apron and spent lots of time checking herself out in the mirror, twirling around. She was so cute! And she looked adorable in her apron, that even matched the headband she was wearing.

It was a great show and I have to give a huge thank you once again to the Hollywood Craft Mafia for putting on such a great show. I had a great time, hung out with some great people and met some great new ones too. I can't wait til next year's Odd Duck! The Mini ManApron

For a while now, I've been wanting to make this for my shop. An apron for the little boys out there. I have one for the big guys, and now the little guys can have cool aprons to cook and play in too!

I made my first Mini ManApron for my nephew. He rocked his apron doing crafts and making cupcakes. I made a few adjustments, and now have a great little apron for everyone!

The Mini ManApron is just that, a mini size of my ManApron. It has the super long waist ties, so you can tie up front or in the back, and a kid-sized pocket, in case your little chef needs to keep some tools handy. Most aprons I'd seen were solid colors and so boring. So just like the rest of the designed by Diana aprons, I made them in cool prints. This first one has trees on it. But keep checking the store to see what other prints are coming soon.

Though it's called the Mini ManApron, this little butcher style apron would work well for girls too. And any size kid can wear this apron, since both the neck and waist ties give plenty of room for it to fit any kid.

I'm so happy to finally have aprons for the entire family! So what do you think of the new Mini ManApron?

Slacking off and an interview

I'm a slacker. This blogger has been slacking big time, but I do have a valid list of excuses.

I like to include pics in my posts and just haven't gotten around to taking pics these days.
I was getting ready for Odd Duck Bazaar this past weekend.
Managing Handmade Miami stuff is taking a bit longer than I thought.
Really, I'm just a slacker.

But now onto some fun stuff. In addition to being team captain for the Handmade Miami Etsy Team, I'm also a member of the Retro Handmade Etsy Team. They interviewed me last week for their blog. You can see my interview here at the Retro Handmade Team Blog!

And onto some great news, for only $7 at Radio Shack, I was able to replace the missing cable from my bias tape maker. So there were a few new Retro D Aprons to show off at Odd Duck this weekend.

My Beloved Bias Tape Maker

If you've checked out my store, you can see that one of the aprons that I make is completely contoured in bias tape. Now buying it at the store was getting expensive and not giving me the color selection I wanted, so about a year ago, I decided to get myself a bias tape maker. I'd been eyeing it a JoAnn's for a while, and it finally went off of sale, so I got it with my coupon for a great deal.

This little machine makes TONS of bias tape in no time, and let's me get to making the Retro D Apron a little faster. So this weekend, in anticipation of Odd Duck coming up, I was making some more Retro D Aprons. I had about 8 yards of bias cut and ready to go through the machine to get nice and ironed and made into neat bias tape. So I got everything ready. I was about to turn on my machine when I noticed I didn't have the power cord. So I looked... and looked. In my new craft room, in my old craft room, in my bedroom, in my grandma's sewing area in the garage. I even looked in my brother's audio studio room. But nothing. Somehow my power cord has mysteriously disappeared. :(

So I'm posting a missing person's report for my power cord. Thank you for all your service, but please come home soon, I miss you terribly. And if as my friends said, that little gnomes walked into my room and stole it, I plead to the gnomes of the crafting world. Please return my cord and I will reward you with ribbons and notions and fabric that you can keep.

I hope I find it soon....

In the sweatshop

Forgive my terrible mess of a craft room. The kitchen remodel had begun and I have my baking supplies, and my KitchenAid Stand Mixer, mingling with my fabrics.

I did make one major improvement in my work-in-progress craft room. Last weekend I was sewing up some pouches and had my sewing machines on the 6 foot foldable table I bought to use for shows. I thought it would be the perfect solution for my sewing station, but I was wrong. This table was way too wide. In order for me to reach the pedals, the machine had to be pushed way back or my pedal was way too far for my little feet.

I could have lived with that, but then there was the shaking problem. Now I consider myself a pretty experienced sewer. So when I'm making up a batch of aprons or pouches, I can basically make them in my sleep. This means when I get to the sewing part, I put the pedal to the metal and let my machine go as fast as it can. Well my foldable table didn't like that one bit. The whole table shook as I sewed and slowly things started falling off as I was working.

Luckily my parents were taking a little trip to Ikea last friday and got me this table. It perfectly fits both Sewphia (my sewing machine) and Merry (my serger) on it and I even have room for my scissors caddy. This table is also narrower and lets everything fit perfectly on top without making me reach. Plus, no shaking! I highly recommend the Vika series tables from Ikea. They come in a variety of sizes (mine is a little under 4 feet long) and tons of colors, and being from Ikea, are totally affordable. I had a smaller version Vika table before, which I'm now using as my computer desk. Unfortunately Ikea is in no way paying me for this endorsement, but I thought I'd share my great find.

With my new table, and a Harry Potter marathon on TV, I did get tons of sewing done for Odd Duck this weekend. Great new pouches and wallets are ready to go and I cut out some aprons too. I hope to squeeze in some sewing throughout the week after my Zumba classes. We'll see how that goes.

I'm also prepping for the Handmade Miami Etsy 101 workshop that I'm teaching on Sunday. So any of you etsians out there, feel free to leave any tips you may have about running an Etsy store in the comments.

Crafty Overload

I know I haven't posted on here in a few days, but I've been crafting and planning to craft like crazy!

I don't know if I mentioned this, but back in June, along with a few crafty friends, we founded Handmade Miami. We started out at the Miami Etsy Party last June, which Vanessa and I planned. Frances and Julie (of Mindy and Lola) were there and we decided that it would be great to get the Miami handmade community together. So with that, we started Handmade Miami. We have monthly Crafter-noons and are planning an Etsy Business Workshop in a few weeks and will also be doing some volunteer work at Miami Children's Hospital soon too. A few weeks ago we even did our first crafty party. The group is growing and growing and it's so exciting to see it all happen so fast! I'm also getting ready for the Odd Duck Indie Craft Fair on April 9th. This show is in its second year and looks like it'll be even better than the first. So the sweatshop has been in full effect getting ready for that too. I'm working on lots more aprons and lunchboxes. I'm also trying to get together a new display to go along with my cute new logo. I just hope I have time to do it all!

What's making this all a little harder than usual, besides the lack of time, was the fact that I moved my craft room recently. I've been slowly trying to put it all back together and get it organized, but it's still pretty crazy in there. And later this week we will be starting a remodel in the kitchen, so my KitchenAid and a bunch of other kitchen stuff has been creeping in. But I have great ideas for my new craft room, and I'll post pics as soon as I can get it all done.

Well looks like it's about time to get back into the sweatshop.

30 for 30: Recap

I know, I know, I got back into my slacker blogger ways, but I've been super busy. I liked hearing from all of you on my blog, so I'm gonna try to keep blogging consistently. We'll see how that goes.

So here is my 30 for 30 recap. Overall, I did think I learned to remix a bit. I'm still shocked that I made it through the whole challenge. YAY me! Here are all of the outfits in all of their glory:

Looking at this I can see I kinda used two outfits twice (#6 & #22 and #7 & #24), but does it still count if I mixed it up with different jewelry?

I have to say that I learned to love dresses a little more with this challenge too. I may have to get some more for the sweltering Miami summer.

Now that I'm not on the challenge I really have a hard time figuring out what to wear. Is that weird or what? I want to wear different things, but in all reality the clothes in my challenge is most of what I own minus a few dozen tank tops.

What I missed most on the challenge was all of my shoes. Being limited to only 5 pairs was crazy, but I did learn to love my glitter flats. I did go shopping the weekend after this was all over. I got a super cute blazer at JC Penney on clearance for $20. Score!

I might try doing the summer 30 for 30, but for that one I know a lot more flip flops and tank tops will be involved. How'd you all do in your 30 for 30?

Oscars 2011: The fashion

It's the Super Bowl of fashion, the Oscars. If there is one red carpet to be seen on, this is the one. The real movie stars come out and show off their best red carpet looks. The red carpet last night was beautiful. So here we go, the fashion of the 83rd Academy Awards.

Let's start with the trends. Blush was big on the red carpet again, and red also made a great comeback.

Lace was another big trend on the carpet. And it's not your grandma's lace anymore. The lace was in great colors and gave these gowns tons of interest and detail.

Another beautiful trend on the carpet was metallics. These weren't your normal metallics, these metallics looked like liquid. The fabric in these gowns is just gorgeous.

Some of our favorite couples looked great on the Oscar red carpet. Here are some of my favorites.

Annette Benning & Warren Beatty

The most improved award goes to Annette Benning. This is the way a Best Actress nominee should dress. The dress shows off another big trend of the night, short sleeves, and all over sparkle. She set it off just right with simple earrings.

Javier Bardem in Gucci & Penelope Cruz in L'Wren Scott

This couple was the talk of the carpet for two reasons. First Javier's best actor nomination and second, the fact that Penelope gave birth to their son weeks ago. She looks amazing, though I'm not a huge fan of the dress.

Tim Burton & Helena Bonham Carter (in Colleen Atwood)

These two are always wacky, but I thought they looked Oscar appropriate while still keeping their style. I really loved that Helena had the costume designer Colleen Atwood make her dress, which I thought was great on her. I also love the fan purse.

Now it's time to get down to the nitty gritty. The best and worst dressed. I'll start off with the best dressed men.

5. Matthew McConaughey in Dolce & Gabbana with Camila Alves

I just love Matthew McConaughey. And McConaughey in a tux? That's just a no brainer.

4. Jeremy Renner in Yves Saint Laurent

Jeremy smartly sported a white shirt for the Oscars. The shawl collar and classic bow tie make this Supporting Actor nominee look as good as ever.

3. Zachary Levi

This was a big surprise to see TV's Chuck clean up and look like such a movie star. Hand-tied bow tie and a classic, and here is the key, well fitting tux gave Zachary star power.

2. Justin Timberlake in Tom Ford with his mom

Now we all know JT was a fashion icon well before he made it in the movies. And now that's he's more an actor than a singer, his fashion is all movie star. Tom Ford even custom fitted this suit to him.

1. Robert Downey, Jr. with wife and producer, Susan

Never in my wildest dreams did I think that RDJ would be on the best dressed list, let alone at number 1! He finall looks as he should on the red carpet. He's actually in a tux! and the white tie is great. It makes him look different, but in such a classy way.

No for the ladies... I couldn't decidre on 5, so I picked 6 (It's my list, so I can do what ever I want!) So here are the Best Dressed Women:

6. Cate Blanchette in Givenchy Couture
Cate is a fashion risk-taker. And she took a risk wearing this Givenchy Couture creation. But her risk paid off. This dress is perfect for her, risk taking yet stil elegant and prefect for the Oscars. her hair and minimal jewelry let the dress do all the work. This is a walking piece of art.

5. Reese Witherspoon in Armani Prive

I always love Reese, and she did not disappoint. This retro-inspired look suits her. And you know how much I love a retro-inspired look. The dress is gorgeous, simple and elegant. She didn't do a big necklace, like has been done in the past, she kept it simple with earrings and a bracelet. Then the retro ponytail finishes off the look.

4. Hailee Steinfeld in Marchesa

Hailee is a breath of fresh air to the carpet. This 14-year-old knows how to dress for her age while still getting that movie star glamour in there too. She actually had the idea for this dress and Marchesa made it for her. It's beautiful and so appropriate for her. She looks absolutely beautiful and I love the tea length of the dress.

3. Jennifer Hudson in Versace

Jennifer Hudson is looking amazing these days. And she's taking advantage to show off her new svelete frame. The former Oscar winner is absolutely stunning in this tangerine versace. The dress is grand, but there is no better place to wear a grand dress then the grand red carpet of the Oscars.

2. Mandy Moore in Monique Lhuillier

This was a HUGE surprise when I saw Mandy Moore on the carpet. I have never seen her look so beautiful and polished. The Monique Lhuillier gown is stunning. Though it looks like the crystals are floating on Mandy, there is actually netted fabric that reaches all the way to the neck and down the sleeves.. But it has been done in such a perfect way, that it is barely noticable. This gown will definitley be copied.

1. Michelle Williams in Chanel Couture

Michelle Williams totally redeemed herself after the disaster that was the Golden Globes this year. The beautiful beaded Chanel Couture gown was perfect and simple. I loved the sleeves and the high neck, who said you need cleavage to be sexy. The color is gorgeous on her and it all works perfectly with her pixie haircut.

Now, the fun stuff. First, the Worst Dressed Men:

5. Colin Firth with wife Livia

As much as it pains me to do this, but I have to make this year's best actor, Colin Firth, one of the worst dressed. He's Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones. We all usually love him, but the main culprit here is the hair. Could it be any messier? Mr. Firth, find yourself a good barber. (P.S. Loved you as the King in The King's Speech)

4. Jesse Eisenberg

Just because you played Mark Zuckerberg, who prefers sweats to suits, doesn't mean you can't buck up for the Oscars. He did wear a suit, that seems to fit him, but it looks wrinkled. And he looks sooo happy to be there. I know you knew you wouldn't get the win, but be happy to be there.

3. Christian Bale with wife Sibi

I really love Christian Bale. Had he kept the long hair he had at the critics choice, I might be all over this, but I'm just not digging the shorter hair. And the black shirt, again? Couldn't you have gone with a white one for the Oscars?

2. Francis Ford Coppola

Why just why? There is no excuse for this Mr. Coppola. I don't care how many awards the Academy has given you. There is just no excuse for that tie.

1. Russell Brand

Russell Brand was invited in part to pimp out his new version of Arthur (yes that 80s movie with Dudley Moore), but this is the Oscars, not some regular show. The plaid shirt is just the highlight of this disastrous navy blue debacle.

And at long last, the Worst Dressed Women:

5. Halle Berry in Marchesa

Halle used to be one of the best on the red carpret, but I'm not a fan of her lately. This dress just looks like she was mauled by a cat, who ripped apart the dress.

4. Nicole Kidman in Dior Couture

Sometimes wearing couture just doesn't work in the real world. Did Nicole want to remind us that she now has two babies by making her hips look so big? I do love the orange shoes though.

3. Melissa Leo in Marc Bouwer

Just so much wrong here. Now if you just put up a huge ad campaign for your in consideration ads with you looking all hot and sexy, please don't show up to the awards looking like this. Melissa Leo looks like she took her grandmother's tablecloth and made it into a housecoat. Maybe if it fit better it might have worked, but this is just a mess.

2. Sharon Stone in Christian Dior

Who invited Sharon Stone? And did she misunderstand and think it was a costume party? The Bride of Frakenstein look does nothing at all here.

1. Florence Welch in Valentino

I can almost see the finish line in the horizon! It's supposed to be hitting 80 today (I know this sounds awesome for those of you that have spent weeks in the cold, but with summer looming here in Miami, we take as much cool as we can.), so I needed something cool and comfy. Today I had to drive home, but first I picked up a new camera! I had been eyeballing my friend Kris's Nikon Coolpix s4000, and luckily she saved the flyer for a place in Orlando that had it on sale. It came in a bundle with a cute purple case and a memory card. I'm so happy to have a working camera and I'm also really glad to be out of the car.

Now I took this pic at home in a new location. I'm not thrilled about it and I need more camera practice, but it'll do for now.

Today was my nephew's 4th birthday! When we went out this morning to take him to get his 4 year pictures taken, and it wasn't just chilly, it was downright cold. Now my grey cardi is cute and all, but it's not very warm (it's no thicke than a t-shirt). So I was gonna buy a long sleeve t-shirt to wear under my red t-shirt, but remembered I had a warmer sweater waiting for me i my car. So, I had to break a rule to stay warm today, instead of shopping though, I opted for the grey sweater. It was at least the same color of the cardi. And body was really greatful for the warmth.

Superhero Capes

So I know this little guy who's turning 4 this weekend. (He just happens to be the son of one of my best friends, Kristina.) And this little superhero wanted a super birthday party, where, of course, it would all be about superheroes, but most of all Ironman--cause Ironman is awesome.

To make this birthday really super, I made capes for all of his little guests. I found a great tutorial on Creative Kismet for superhero capes and adapted it. Making the capes was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I just pretty much eyeballed cutting them and then serged the edges. I also made the tabs out of fabric and serged those too. Then I just attached them with a straight stitch. I made the capes in red, yellow and blue, so everyone could choose their favorite color.

Once they were all made, I couldn't figure out what to do with the backs of the capes, initials, symbols, the possibilities were endless. But then I figured the kids could all decorate their own capes (plus it would keep them entertained for a while). I attached circles of white felt on the back and then put out my fabric markers, so the kids could decorate them however they wanted. This was a huge hit. As soon as the first kid made their cape , everyone ran over to make one. The kids got busy decorating and grabbing markers. There were kids ranging in age from 3 to 10 and all of them loved making their capes. Check out the birthday boy working on his.

I decided to opt for velcro neck closures instead of the ribbons for safety purposes. This way if they got caught on anthing the capes would release easy. (As we all know there can be serious danger in cape wearing--just ask Edna Mode. LOL)

Both the kids and the parents were wild about the capes. It was awesome to see all those capes running around in the backyard. And each one was so different. The kids really made them their own.

It's vacation day for me! It also meant I was driving to Orlando, so comfort is of great importance. I love this dolman sleeved top, and putting it in the 30 for 30 challenge was a great way to get it into more outfits. Now it was muggy this morning in Miami, but is a little chillier up here in Orlando, so for this evening's festivties I may add the brown cardi and brown boots.

It finally died. Yesterday as I finished taking the daily outfit pic, the battery compartment just refused to stay closed. Uploading yesterday's pics was a feat in and of itself. But this camera was a good little camera. It survived a little over a year (and with my amount of pictures that's a feat). Thanks for everything, even though only recently did I discover your manual white balance feature.

So for now, I have a loaner camera from my mom. And I hope that Monday, I can go hit up Best Buy for a new camera. Does anyone have suggestions for a good point and shoot model? I'd prefer one with a manual white balance, but am just looking to get something good with an internal battery. Can't wait to see all the suggestions.

30 for 30: Day 9

Day 9! I never thought I'd make it, but I feel the trickier part is coming up. Now that I've worn pretty much everything, the mixing will commence. I hope I can do it.

Well my cold seems to be better, but I woke up with a helluva headache. I'm not sure if it was sleeping in my new bed (I rearranged my room--I'll post pics when it's all done) or just my body recovering from the mini-cold, but by this afternoon I was feeling much better.

I recently re-found this necklace when I was cleaning out my drawers the other day and had been wanting to wear it. One of my best friends brought me these beads (acutally Kukui nuts) from Hawaii years ago. They make leis out of them but she just brought me the beads and ribbon, since she knew I'd like to make it myself anyways. And I made this cute "Wilma Flinstone" like necklace. What do you think? I'm trying to find more "statement" jewelry and I think this fits the bill.
