Lego birthday

My little brother's (little being that he turned 26 this year) birthday was this past Friday, so we had dinner and a cake to celebrate.

I had seen this Lego cake online somewhere (I don't remember where) a few weeks ago and knew it would be the perfect cake for Angel. Ang was all about the legos when he was little, so I knew it would be cool to do for his birthday.

It was pretty easy. I baked a cake in my brownie pan, which is a smaller rectangle than my regular 13x9 cake pan. I divided the batter in two, so I would have two layers. Took my can of frosting and dyed the frosting blue with Wilton Icing Color. This icing color works so much better than the food coloring you get in the supermarket. Since it's a thick gel, it doesn't thin out the frosting as you add more to get the color. I stacked and frosted my cake layers and then I was ready to Lego-fy it.

The trick to make the cake look like Legos is regular size marshmallows. Just cut them in half, I recommend using your kitchen scissors for this, then place them on the cake to look like the Lego pegs. Then frost the marshmallows to match the cake.

Ta da! You have a Lego cake! Now I'll admit frosting those marshmallows wasn't the easiest thing in the world, but it wasn't the hardest either. I'm just a little obsessive and wanted it all to look smooth. I think I did a pretty good job considering this was my first try.

This is such a fun cake to have for a birthday. You can even cut your cake into different sized squares and rectangles to make different sized Legos.

I got inspired after making the cake, so I've signed up for the Wilton Cake Decorating class starting in March. I can't wait to show you what I'll be learning to make.

What do you think of the Lego cake? Have you ever made a fun decorated cake?
