Golden Globes 2011: The Fashion

Awards season has officially begun, which means deep thought provoking movies and lots and lots of fashion! So here is the first big show of awards season, the 2011 Golden Globes, let's check out the fashion.

First, I'm gonna start off with the trends. Simplicity seemed to be key on the carpet and overall the jewels were kept to a minimum.

The first thing I noticed on the carpet was all the green. Deep emerald greens seemed to be the color of the night. Just look how these lovely ladies showed it off.

Another big color of the night was pink. Bright pinks and peaches gave the carpet a little fun and brightness.

L to R: Claire Danes in Calvin Klein, Emma Stone in Calvin Klein and Julianne Moore in Lanvin

Bows seemed to make an appearance on the carpet as well. Whether tiny like Nicole Kidman, floppy like Julianna Margulies or big like Jessalyn Gilsig, bows are definitely in.

We all know that our celebrities love their sparkle, but it seems like the sparkle moved from the jewels right to the dresses. The sparkles went from top to bottom. These dresses were so sparkly there was no need for jewelry.

L to R: Amber Riley, Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive, Carrie Underwood in Badgley Mischka, Olivia Wilde in Marchesa

And the color that was most prominent on the carpet was blush/sand. Blush seemed to be the go-to color of choice for almost everyone on the carpet. As you can see here, blush can look classic and yet modern.

L to R: Kaley Cuoco in Katherine Kidd, Sarah Hyland in Max Azria and Dianna Agron in J Mendel

Now here's the thing with blush. It's best when it's kept simple. Here are some ways the trend when horribly wrong. There is just too much going on with these dresses!

Another big trend I noticed on the carpet was neat clean french twists. The classic french twist was seen on a lot of the ladies gracing the carpet. It gives you the right amount of formality, but still looked very modern. There were also simply ponytails on many of the ladies keeping with the simplicity of the looks. (If I can find pics of the hair, I'll post them.)

Some of our favorite celebrity couples came out to the Globes and they were looking good as ever.

L to R: Kyra Sedgwick & Kevin Bacon, Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta Jones and Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban

Here are some of my all-time favorites. They have looked better on other occasions, but no matter what, it's always great to see them. I mean who doesn't love these guys?

L to R: Rita Wilson & Tom Hanks and Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie

Now there are some couples, that no matter how much love I had for them, just didn't have it together. Nothing could forgive this disaster.
Annette Benning and Warren Beatty

Now onto the fun stuff... best and worst dressed!

First the best dressed men:

5. Alec Baldwin in Badgley Mischka Couture
Always classy, Alec Baldwin knows how to wear a suit. It fits him well, and he goes totally classic with pointed lapels and a bow tie.

4. Jeremy Renner
Jeremy is a fun modern guy. I like that he went with the dark shirt, but still opted for the bow tie. I think it gives him a bit of fun that suits his personality without going overboard.

3. Chris Coifer
Chris is just adorable, and seeing him win was just awesome. He looks classy in his pretty basic tux. He opted for the cool long tie, and the jacket has satin lapels. With other guys on his cast going a little crazy with the tuxes, it's nice to see he kept it classic.

2. Jake Gyllenhaal in Burberry
Jake is always one of my favorites, regardless of what he wears. He tends to prefer the hand-tied bow tie, which I just love. Plus Jake with a beard is always a good thing.

1. Ryan Gosling
Now Ryan went with what looks like a velvet tux, but it totally does not look cheesy. The suit fits him well, and it looks like another hand-tied bow tie. He's definitely my winner of the night.

Now the best dressed ladies:
5. Melissa Leo
Taking the head-to-toe sparkle trend on in this classy black dress. The square neckline and square cap sleeves give it the right amount of sophisiticaiton to off-set the sequins.

4. Hailee Steinfeld
Other young actresses could learn a thing or two from 14 year old Hailee. She has a beautiful gown, but keeps it age appropriate with understated makeup and another trend from the carpet, a sleek ponytail. Let's hope True Grit gets nominated for an Oscar, so we can see more of her style there.

3. Eva Longoria in Zac Posen
When I first saw Eva on the red carpet, all I could think was wow! This dress fits her like a glove. The neckline is gorgeous and the mermaid skirt looks great on her. The accent of the brooch she used at her waist gave the black dress the perfect touch.

2. Natalie Portman in Viktor & Rolf
Our best actress of the night looked stunning in this blush colored gown. The rose at the bust along with her red accessories and chic french twist were perfection. The Tiffany necklace added the perfect touch. Natalie isn't going to let her growing baby bump deter her style.

1. Piper Perabo in Oscar de la Renta
Never in a million years would I think that Piper Perabo (yes, the girl that was in Coyote Ugly) would be on my best dressed list. But she's doing everything right in this Oscar de la Renta. The dress has a dramatic shoulder bow, and her only real accessory is her red lips. The sleek ponytail completes the look. This is total Hollywood glamour.

And the fun stuff, the worst dressed! Here are the men:
5. Darren Aronofsky
Darren Aronofsky is no doubt a brilliant director. But here he just looks awkward. The pants are too skinny and too short. Let's hope he gets a better fitting for the Oscars.

4. Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross
I have not seen two guys less comfortable in tuxes than these two. Really this is for Trent. I know you're all cool and Mr. NIN, but get over it, you're music is evolving and so should your style, so get used to it.

3. Jesse Tyler Ferguson
I love Jesse on Modern Family. But what I don't love is his (what looks like) green bow tie. Keep it classic. Try showing off your style with a pocket square.

2. Robert Downey, Jr.
Initially RDJ was gonna be my number one, but I just love him too much. He's just terribly under-dressed. The suit is nice, but much more for a luncheon or something like that. RDJ just loves to be different like this, but I'd love to see him in a full-on tux.

1. Justin Beiber
I groaned when I saw Beiber on the red carpet. Who the hell invited him? He looks ridiculous. The sneakers, the super long pants, and then that hair. He cut off some of the signature Beiber hair, but what's left looks silly.

And now onto the worst dressed ladies:
5. Helena Bonham Carter in Vivienne Westwood
Ok, here's another one that was gonna be on top of the list, but then I changed my mind. Yes this Vivienne Westwood is terrible and her hair looks like the bride of Frankenstein, but this is so Helena Bonham Carter. And as for what everyone seems to be calling the mismatched shoes. This is the exact same shoe, just in a different color, so I wouldn't call them mismatched. This is a hot mess, but we expect nothing less than this for Helena.

4. Halle Berry in Nina Ricci
Halle is fabulous and gorgeous most of the time, but this dress is does not work. I feel like the dress had multiple personalities. The top was gorgeous, but once you get to the skirt, you're confused. She is beautiful, but this just is not working for her.

3. Gabourey Sidibe
I know last year Gabourey must have had a larger selection of dresses since she was a nominee. And I know she's a big girl, so it must be harder for her to find something, but this purple printed dress is just a hot mess. Find a new stylist Gabourey.

2. Heidi Klum in Marc Jacobs
Heidi was a model, so she loves to take risks on the carpet, but here she looks like she's going to a fancy beach party. The dress, the hair, nothing is working in this look. Heidi does the big gowns so well, let's hope she goes back to that next time.

1. Leighton Meester in Burberry
Leighton Meester is breaking out into movies with Country Strong, but did she have to raid Barbara Mandrell's 80s wardrobe? The color is blah, the print is weird and the overall look just underwhelms. From the fashion forward world of Gossip Girl, Leighton needs to learn to get that fashion and glamour into the movie star side of her career.

So that's it for the Golden Globes. What did you think of the stars? Who were your best and worst dressed?
