2014 Oscars fashion

I'm a total slacked this year and didn't even see one of the movies nominated for best picture, but that doesn't mean I still don't love watching the Oscars. Let's be serious, it is the Super Bowl of fashion and movies. So, let's take a look at the most important red carpet of the year.

Metallics were still hot on the carpet for Oscar.
Jennifer Garner in Oscar de la Renta
Jennifer looked great in this metallic gown. I love the tiered skirt, which didn't end up getting too poufy with all those layers of fabric.

Jessica Biel in Chanel
The ice on her wrists and neck worked really well with Jessica's column gown. Shame her best accessory, hubby Justin Timberlake, was on tour and couldn't join her.

Kristen Chenoweth in Roberto Cavalli
Cheno looked like a little Oscar statue wearing all of that gold. I think the dress was a bit to heavy for her petite frame.

The celebrity couples came out to the carpet showing off their Oscar Sunday best.

Christian Bale and Sibi Blazic
Batmna needs a haircut stat. I don't know why he's looking so messy.

Dax Shepard in Jim Varvados and Kristen Bell in Roberto Cavalli
I love these two, besides being awesome people, they look the part on the red Carpet. I'm digging Dax's grey suit and Kristen's Frozen-inspired white dress is perfect for the night.

Olivia Wilde in Valentino and Jason Sudekis in Prada
Ok, I had no idea that Jason Sudekis was even going out with Olivia Wilde (yes, I live under a rock these days), but they looked great together. I love the white detail on the back of her dress, and this navy tux was perfectly tailored, yet still different because of the color.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith in Versace
No idea why Will is wearing an ascot. It counfounds me, but Jada is looking great in that peach Versave.

Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski
I was so happy to see the fashion plates of the Olympics make their way to the red carpet. Johnny is fierce and his bestie Tara is looking great too.

Brad Pitt in Tom Ford and Angelina Jolie in Elie Saab Haute Couture
The king and queen of the carpet look great as always. Angie joined in on the metallic trend with this gown, though I would have liked to see her in something a bit more form fitting. But she was just there to support her honey, the Oscar winner for Best Picture. And Brad, just always looks good in a tux.

Here are the best dressed men of the night.
5. Jared Leto in Yves Saint Laurent
How can you not love Jordan Catalano? People kept telling me his hair was greasy, but I didn't see it. I love the white dinner jacket, and this rockstar status, and hotness, even make me allow him to be in that red bow tie.

4. Martin Scorcese
I had to put Marty in there cause he's always such a classic. Gotta love him.

3. Chiwetel Ejiofor
A classic man in a classic tuxedo. Perfect for Oscar.

2. Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Calvin
I just love JGL, and he's grown up so good. And put him in a tux, just wow. Can someone please put him in more Oscar movies, so we can keep seeing him at these things?

1. Matthew McConaughey in Dolce & Gabbanna with Camila Alves
Alright, alright, alright... Best Actor winner, Matthew is looking dapper in his white dinner jacket with vest and tie. I love that he mixed it up a bit, but kept it totally classic and cool.

And now the best dressed ladies of the night.
5. Anna Kendrick in J Mendel
Anna is one of the only people to really take a fashion risk, and I think it paid off. I love the edgy look of this dress, and a younger actress like Anna is just the one to make it work. I love the hair and I adore her red clutch.

4. Cate Blanchett in Armani
Cate is usually a red carpet let down for me, but I think she knew she was gonna win Best Actress, so she stepped it up. This gorgeous nude and jeweled Armani is modern and classic and totally befitting a Best Actress.

3. Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen
Sandy has been hit or miss on the carpet lately, but this dress put her back on the top. The draping and color and her sideswept hair were just perfect.

2. Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace
This is the way the metallic trend should be done. Kate Hudson totally shocked me in this dress. It is amazing. The smokey eyes against the silver gown and understated hair were just right.

1. Charlize Theron in Dior
I LOVE this dress. The top is just amazing, but then the sheer overskirt makes it even better. Add that amazing necklace and this is what iconic Oscar looks are made of.

And onto the fun stuff, the worst dressed. First, the guys.
2. Jeremy Renner
Jeremy's bow tie is bigger than his face. It just doesn't work.

1. Pharrell Williams
I would like to thank Pharrell for actually putting on pants for his performance during the ceremony, but he could have actually worn pants for the carpet too.

And now the ladies that needed a little help.

5. Glenn Close in Zac Posen
This dress is just so heavy. I feel liek her body is going to be cast for some special effects makeup. Showing some arm would totally help.

4. Julie Delpy in Jenny Packham
This is just a big ol' mess. Shapeless and just too matronly.

3. Elsa Pataky
This is not how to rock your baby bump. I feel like she tried to squeeze into a dress that fit her pre-baby. This is just not a good look.

2. Sally Hawkins in Valentino
And the I went to grandma's attic to find my dress award goes to Sally Hawkins. It's too matronly, too big and just too ugly.

1. Liza Minelli
The pants, the off-the-shoulder top, the satin, the blue hair, the facelift... why, why, why, why, why?

Another awards season has come to an end my friends. Hopefully, I'll be able to see some of the nominees soon. It was a great show and we got to see some great fashion.

Who were your faves on the red carpet?

2014 Golden Globes: Fashion

I don't know why it seemed to come so fast this year, but it's officially awards season. And for me that means great movies and awesome fashion. Here are the first of the bunch, TV and movies all mixed in together, the Golden Globes.  (NOTE: As always, this post is image heavy!)

The big trend on the carpet was champagne. Lots of ladies sported this color on the carpet.

Anna Gunn in Donna Karan Atelier
What a change from her character on Breaking Bad. Anna Gunn really looks great in the sculptural champagne gown, but I wish her earrings were a bit larger.

Naomi Watts in Tom Ford
Naomi looks beyond tiny in this column, but the cutouts, which you can't really see in this pic, are what really make this dress even more stunning.

There were also lots of silver gowns on the carpet.

Kate Beckinsale in Zuhair Murad
Kate is svelte and stunning in this form fitting silver gown. On TV she looked like she had done a little something to her face... no need Kate.

Kate Mara in J Mendel
This sleek silver dress seems to mix the 20s vibe everyone is loving lately with a modern element of architectural cap sleeves.

Glitter shoes tutorial

A great accessory for any costume are some glitter shoes. They can make a fairy or princess even more perfect, and can just add that special touch to a normal outfit. I made some glitter shoes for my Halloween costume this year.

I had some old thrifted shoes that were perfect to glitter up for my costume. Glittering shoes (or glittering really anything) is so easy.

Here are the supplies you'll need:
  • Mod Podge
  • Glitter
  • Sandpaper
  • Paintbrush
  • Newspaper

  • Pour some Mod Podge into a container (I use a disposable bowl for ease of cleanup) and then add the glitter right to the Mod Podge. This is the key to this technique. Since you mix the Mod Podge with the glitter, it seals the glitter in place, making way less of a mess.

Next you'll need to prep your shoes. All they need is a light sanding with some fine grit sandpaper. You just want to take the shine off of the shoes, so the glitter will stick even better.

Stuff the inside of your shoes with newspaper to make sure the inside stays clean. Take your paintbrush and paint on the Mod Podge/glitter mixture. It might take a couple of coats to get the color you want. Just paint a coat on and let it dry a bit before adding more. It will look white, but the Mod Podge will dry clear and you will be able to see the glitter really sparkle.

Then wait for them to dry. After you have done all of your coats, let them dry overnight, so they will be really dry before you wear them.

Once they are dry it's like you have a whole new pair of shoes.

And voila! Your very own glitter shoes. You can use any color of glitter and any shoes you want to get the look that would be perfect for you.

Any guesses on my Halloween costume this year?

    Emmys 2013: The fashion post

The big start to the new television season really begins with the Emmys. We reminisce about the last years' best before we begin a new year of great television. And there is always the fashion to get us going. Here is my 2013 Emmys fashion recap.

First, let's take a look at the trends on the red carpet. First there were the stunning black and white gowns:
    Morgan Saylor in Alma
The Homeland beauty is stunning in her graphic black and white gown.

    Merritt Wever
The queen of the thank you speech, Nurse Jackie's Merritt Wever, rocked the black and white.

Now, black and white was hot, but ice blue was the color of the night.
    Padma Lakshmi in kaufmanfranco
Padma's top and skirt combo was refreshing and fun. The ice blue looks beautiful on her skin tone.

    Malin Akerman in Marchesa
Malin Akerman's icy blue Marchesa gown was a bit too bridal for me. She should have gone for something a bit simpler.

    Zooey Deschanel in J. Mendel
I always love Zooey's retro-inspired style, but this modern silhouette really suits her. Plus the color matched her eyes exactly.

Now onto the best and worst. We'll start out with the best dressed men:
    5. Jason Bateman and wife Amanda Anka

Jason is an old pro at the Emmys, and you can tell with his laid back yet classic and cool style.

    4. Seth Meyers and wife Alexi Ashe
This is why we love this guy doing Weekend Update every week. He's adorable and funny, but still looks like a guy you want to hang with.

    3. & 2. Aaron Paul & Bryan Cranston both in Burberry
Gotta give 3rd and 2nd place to the guys from Breaking Bad, they are going out with a bang.

     1. Jon Hamm in Armani with Jennifer Westfeldt in J. Mendel
Jon Hamm is my guy. His Mad Men hiatus beard is always awesome and the classic white dinner jacket is classic while still being different.

Next, the very difficult choice of choosing the best dressed women:
    Honorable Mention - Kiernan Shipka
Everytime I see her, I know why Sally Draper is the HBIC. Kiernan is always age appropriate and on trend.  This dress is adorable. I love the bright flowers and she looks great in it. She's growing into a great fashionista.

    5. Tina Fey in Narciso Rodriguez
Just as her 30 Rock is off the air, Tina finally gets the hang of the whole red carpet thing. The dress hugs her curves in all the right ways and her hair and jewelry are classic and timeless.

    4. Anna Gunn in Ramona Kevesa
The black lace top of this gown gives it great detail and the soft flowing skirt balances out the look. The soft hair and minimal jewels balance out the look to keep it more casual instead of stiff.

    3. Taylor Schilling in Thakoon
White should be the new black, the way that Taylor shows it off.

    2. Allison Williams in Ralph Lauren
The Girls star looked stunning in this classic cobalt gown. Her hair was done in flowing waves to make her look like the girl you'd love to be friends with.

    1. Elisabeth Moss in Andrew Gn
Oh our little Peggy Olsen all grown up. Elisabeth Moss looks every bit the modern girl in this black and white gown. And I just love her new blond bob.

Now we have the fun part, the worst dressed. First, let's look at the men:
    5. Blair Underwood
What is up with the collar on his shirt? And that tie? They just seem very out of date.
    4. LL Cool J in Zenga
The tie, the hat? I don't think so LL. You would have been better off simpler.

    4. Kunal Nayyar with Google Glass
Just because you are on The Big Bang Theory, doesn't mean you have to dress the nerd part all of the time.

    2. Asher Monroe Book
That quilted vest needs to go back to 1987, where it came from.

    1. Judah Friedlander
I know this is his "shtick," but get over yourself. Brush your hair and get rid of the trucker hats already.

And the piece de la resistance, the worst dressed women:
    Honorable Mention - Sarah Silverman
She looks like she just went to the mall and picked this up a few hours ago.

    5. Claire Danes in Armani Privé
Angela Chase (cause I'm sorry, that's who she is to me), is not doing herself any favors in this dress. The color is nothing special on her and the decolletage is just terrible.

    4. Jessica Pare in Oscar de la Renta
This Oscar de la Renta gown confused me. For some reason the bodice just doesn't flatter, and I'm never a fan of a high-low hem. I had more hopes for Megan Draper.
    3. Heidi Klum in Versace
That neck is just so severe. Heidi seems entirely too sweet to wear this harsh dress.

    2. Julianne Hough in Jenny Packham
I do not understand the see through skirt trend that was on the carpet. Bit this just looks like a bathing suit covered with sparkly see-through fabric. Not a good look, and especially not when you have your brother as a date.

    1. Zosia Mamet in Honor
I know she plays ultra-conservative on Girls, but that is no reason to go completely insane on the carpet. the bodice does not flatter at all, and the fabric looks like a bad tie dye.

And now the red carpet will take a little rest until the season really amps up early next year. I'll be sure to recap the best of the Golden Globes and the Oscars too.
